SOLVED. Romance set in historical New Orleans. Girl gets tricked into going to a brothel [s]

I read this book in a Reader's Digest Condensed books sometime in the 80's. It starts out with a young girl, maybe a teenager or very early 20's, who is heading to New Orleans. I believe she is travelling by riverboat, but honestly it's been so long it could be a carriage. Maybe she's in both. Anyway, she gets into a conversation with a seemingly respectable woman who turns out to actually be a madam and tricks the girl into staying with her. She escapes before she is, um, deflowered. There is a man named Val in the book, who turns out to be helping slaves escape via riverboat. Of course he witnesses her with the madam and thinks she is a prostitute.
