Editors: How much would you charge?

Hi! I have a client who is asking how much I'd charge to read her manuscript. It's already been edited twice - she's looking for any glaring errors and wants me to see if I feel the story is solid.

Would you charge proofreading rates, or less?

You should charge a little more than your normal proofreading rate, since it sounds like she is asking for you to beta read the manuscript too.

I've (re) edited books that have been 'edited' before. I'd charge (and have charged) light editing rates, but I'm talking lower hundreds not thousands. Depends what your editing and proofing rates are really.

If you think it is a purely proofing job though, then charge proofing rates. How much of it have you read?

I'd recommend you briefly assess the manuscript if possible (amount of editing work needed, time frame, word count) and discuss your usual rate range with the client, determine their budget, and negotiate an appropriate price. A quick assessment or word count can determine the intensity and time it will take to edit a work.
