Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments I'm on Part Three.
I got really absorbed in Pilgrim's thoughts and ideas after 9/11 and the passages when he is getting to know Ben and Marcie.

When I got to the Saracen and what he does in the Afghan mountains, I didn't want to interrupt even for a second to turn on the reading light!
This is a great read.

What he does was really hard to read :(

Yep. That and what he does at the medical research facility. Flipping heck! :-\

I agree - in the mountains, and as Janet said, with Tlass in the back of the truck and also, I've just got to a bit with Pilgrim when he's describing 'water boarding' a prisoner.

wow- I found them all tough to get through

Kirsten (kmcripn) So hot...

How hot is it?

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) | 313 comments Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying this book (a lot).

Now I'm 52% through.

But I have to say that the underlying race messages are bothering me and spoiling it. It's like a steady drip drip of a tap - I could ignore it for a while but now it's annoying.

I read plenty of books and none have given me such an uneasy feeling in this respect. I guess I'll have to talk about that in my review.
(I can feel a blog post critique growing out of it too...)

I found that aspect unsettling too.

hi Perri, yup, will do

I'm at 80% and the plot is racing ahead with Pilgrim and the Saracen heading for a collision....

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm at 62%... I listen to about an hour a day. It's exceptional and very well plotted.

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I'm delving hard into this one today. I started it over because I remember part 1 being so good I rushed through it. Taking my time this round. The immediate thing that I noticed was how well written it is and although action packed and seemingly for a male audience, it's almost elegant.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I don't get the male audience. Though there aren't that many female characters. Is that what you mean?

message 64: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments No, I mean I definitely was being stereotypical which is unfair, but just that spy novels tend to be aimed at men.

I'm sure many women read them as well. I know I watch them on film a lot. They're some of my faves.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I love espionage! In fact, I got hooked on them in the Cold War days with people Len Deighton and John Le Carre.

message 66: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I really want to read John LeCarre this year. I've added a few of his to my TBR. Which would you recommend starting with...his most famous The Spy Who Came In From The Cold? I had put it on my 2016 reading list but didn't get to it.

message 67: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Loving it and found no difficulty reading the first parts over again. His writing is incredible.

Agnieszka...are you reading it again?

I would start with that one or Call for the Dead first.

3 stars.

The last two days I read another 100 pages but so far I'm not that excited. It's somehow interesting but I'm still struggling with the book. I give it another try until I reached at least 30% and if I don't like it more by than I'm not sure I'll finish it at all :-(

Perri | -43 comments @Ann Great review-although I loved it, I understood why you didn't.
@ Agnieszka-goodness, I often don't give books that long before I give up. On to books you enjoy!

It wouldn't be the first book I didn't like the first quarter of it and changed my mind later about it :-)
I read few times already I gave up too soon on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Since I learned it's a book dealing somehow with math I want to give it another try - though I won't try to read the Polish translation but the German, which is much easier for me :-)
Back to I Am Pilgrim - I have no idea when I'll continue it but for sure not within the next two weeks.

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I haven't read your review yet, Ann but will when I finish. I am shocked to see three stars though. It must have disappointed you greatly in some way. I just came on to write how I have tears streaming down my cheeks steady for the last four pages. I think this book is a five star for me and I am not done yet. It's quite the story and I still have so much more to go.

I'm sorry you didn't like it as much. Can't wait to finish and read your thoughts as well as our fellow friends here. <3

Kirsten (kmcripn) You know, at first I didn't like the backstory stuff he did. But now it's growing on me. I love the Turkish motel manager.... the way he talks is a hoot!

I'm glad you loved it and it give's me hope the back story stuff is important and so I'm much more excited to continue than I was before - thank you Ann!

Hi Amy, I think you'll get my point of view once you've read the review!

(It's also true that I often mark hard, so three is actually not such a bad mark from me...)

message 78: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I finally finished this title yesterday, ladies! It only took ten months. Lol

I put it down for months. Sorry my friends! I felt disappointed in not being able to participate in so many things I had looked forward to in group and buddy reads. My reading suffered greatly this year. Started strong and then died for 3/4 of the year.

Anyway, I did really like it and found it well researched. There were parts I just couldn't read fast enough and then others that had me putting it down. For that reason in any other book, I'd give it way less stars. However, I did find the story crazy and well plotted. Very detailed. I enjoyed it for sure!

I did note Ann's comments and found them to be very true. I definitely see your point looking back at it all.

I'm glad you liked it and what you write lets me wonder if I was too fast to give it up. I think I'll give it another try but no more this year. Perhaps it will be for me like it was with The Happiness Project: Or Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun - my sister lend it to me and asked to read it. The first time I'm not sure I made it past page 5, the second time twice as much, than I made it thought the first chapter this time I'm almost half way through and expect to finish it before she comes the next time in three weeks :-)

Thank you so much for your encouraging thoughts!
