Pearl S Buck was a prolific American author. She won both the Nobel prize for literature (1938) and the Pulitzer prize (1932).
As a daughter of missionaries, she spent most of her life in China, and this is the source of many of her works. She was involved in humanitarian work.

Imperial Woman is an historical novel about the last Empress of China, Tzu Hsi. In youth she was a beautiful concubine, in middle life a brilliant strategist, in old age a goddess. She ranks in history with Victoria of England and Catherine of Russia.

This is my first book by this author and I am looking forward to reading this in January.
