This week brought in more Mangas.
75. Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 2: Surprise Party - ★★★☆☆
78. Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 3: 511 Kinderheim - ★★☆☆☆
The interest is slowly fading in this series, and picking up in this genre ;)
And my first attempt at "reading" Sherlock also came this week...
76. A Study in Scarlet - ★★★★☆ (with Aka)
77. The Sign of Four - ★★★☆☆
Apart from these,
79. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind - ★★★★¼ (with Arpit, Smi)
Had been reading this since past 1.5 months. Its the middle chapters that took most time, since deviations and other book intrusions were easier on those relatively dry parts.

And this completes the half year!
Looking back at it, I'm pretty content with the explorations so far. No doubt I've read the most, and with good variations this year.
Whats left behind:
1. Bookriots read harder challenge - Not going to pursue it.
2. Wanted more Murakamis this year - Haven't read any. Will be picking one soon.
3. Books acquired in 2016 - have read only 7 out of 23. (And the challenge goes steeper next year! Have acquired 74 books this year so far :D)
4. Sahitya Akademi winners - 6 out of 12
Whats accomplished:
1. Variety of recommended reads - in terms of weekend reads, readathons, and personal recos. (Personal thanks to the bunch of wonderful recommenders!)
2. Explored well in Graphic Novels and Mangas.
3. More non-fictions this year.
4. Am now comfortable with Hindi reads :)
Looking out for more fun and action in the latter half of the year.
Cheers!

Wow! Congratulations Gorab!
The most organized journal and on top of that 97 books unread in your bookshelf - total envy :)

Congratulations to your half-year achievements! I'm glad you enjoyed it till now and I hope you will find other interesting books for the next six months.
Good going, Gorab.
Good luck with challenge 3.
And if you're reading a Murakami thst I haven't yet read, always willing to join in. :)
And, parroting Resh 👏👏

Thanks everyone and same wishes to you too :) [to keep inspiring me more :P]
Girish, Dely - Those unread books are a vicious circle :D If somehow I'm able read even half of them next year (and I'm intending to!), that will boost the purchase of more books for the forthcoming year :) :) :)
I sincerely hope that happens!
Rebecca, Yes totally enjoying it :)
Shalini, just realised we don't have any Murakami in our intended BR list. Will fix that soon.
Thanks Kakashi.
Jaya, Keep showering your blessings from where you are looking from .... in terms of fast and interesting graphic novels ;)

80. A Fine Balance - ★★★★★ (with Arpit, Shar)
Read it over a month, and this was the leader of the pack among other books during the entire period.
81. The Importance of Being Earnest - ★★★★☆ (weekly group)
A classic suggested by Vimal for the weekend read. Loved it.
82. A Case of Need - ★★☆☆☆ (medical theme; with Resh and Smi)
Didn't enjoy as much as I would have liked. The best parts were the footnotes and appendices. Didn't incite much interest.
Ongoing:
Satya Ke Prayog - Gandhiji's autobio in Hindi. With Arpit. Thought we'd take 3+ months for this Hindi tome... but its very interesting and easy Hindi, looks like we'll gobble it up sooner than that. At 40% in a week.
Ready Player One - At 75%. Needs one more sitting when in a virtual gaming mood. Probably will be a 5 star till the end.
Black Hole - Time pass graphic novel. Was supposed to be horror. Finding it lame. 2 stars at 50%
Masala Chay - Reading with wife. Collection of short stories. Except one college story, rest are cheap. Both of us not liking it much. 2 stars at 70%
The Gene - Alas.... Much awaited. Reading with Smi and Resh. Only read the prologue and it is super interesting. Looks like a fun ride.
Time Stops at Shamli - with Resh, Tarinee and ArpitJoshi. Comfort read. Short stories. Going one story a day.

Wife's readings:
She's finding aversion to Kindle and loving thin easy to carry paperbacks. Prefers to read one book at a time.
Her recent readings In reverse chronology:
Masala Chay - currently reading. 2 stars.
Bahurani - 2 stars. Didn't enjoy the rustic descriptions. The lives of Kings and Queens were not that interesting.
Afterwards - 4 stars. Has reco'd to me.
One and a Half Wife - 3 stars. Time pass reco.
Meri Priya Kahaniyaan - 2.5 stars.
We have an understanding that unless she finds a book extremely pathetic, I'm going to follow up all that she's reading. Because we love discussing them (Ha ha! Who doesn't!)
What she would read after Masala Chay? I don't know. She doesn't either. Probably some paperback which I haven't read.

Added Afterwards to my TBR too. I have a penchant for books describing marriage and it's success/failure. .
I too have a penchant for books landing in my shelf because of (my) marriage :)
We can BR this too. Going by our BR list (After Gene.... Equal Music, Kolkatta, Parva (and other Bhyrappas), Murakami, Afterwards) - we already are unofficial lifetime buddies! Cheers!

83. Meri Priya Kahaniyaan - ★★★☆☆
Read in May between book number 58 and 59. Missed to add it then. Realized it now and so adding here.
84. Black Hole - ★★☆☆☆
Another failed experiment with graphic novels.....
85. Masala Chay - ★★☆☆☆ (with wife)
Again, not an impressive read.
Today GR showed that I have read 85 books this year(and hence the realisation of missed book 83), surpassing my last highest of 84 books read in 2016. Yay :D
And an apt inspiration:

Thank you Glen!
Frankly I don't see it as a respectable or extraordinary feat... But encouraging words help boost up the spirit to read more.
So thanks again :)

The screenshot? My GR doesn't show such stats :(
Is it app for something?

No, there isn't any such message :/
It's okay, though.

Completed only 3 books in the past couple of weeks:
86. The Story of My Experiments With Truth - ★★★★☆ (with Arpit)
87. Time Stops at Shamli and Other Stories - ★★★½☆ (with Rebecca and ArpitJoshi)
88. Counting My Blessings - ★★★★☆
And so I've read 9 books in July, which is one of the least in terms of book count in a month. Last year, the same would have been the month with most reads :P So I'm very happy with the way the reading spirit in me is evolving :)
The highlight for this month was vacations. And while vacations and readings do gel together pretty good, the holidays had an adverse effect on my reading time. But I don't have any regrets or complaints on that front either ;)
Only regrets are not able to participate in weekend reads, and abandoned BRs - all my different buddies except Rebecca have abandoned the reads!
Silver lining is I've read and enjoyed more non-fictions... to the extent that I want more of them now!
Upcoming:
Kalkatta - BR with Smi from 5th Aug.
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic
86. The Story of My Experiments With Truth - ★★★★☆ (with Arpit)
87. Time Stops at Shamli and Other Stories - ★★★½☆ (with Rebecca and ArpitJoshi)

Only 3 books in two weeks?! I'm glad if I'm able to read 3 books in a month.
Did you go somewhere for your vacation?
Current readings:
CoT at 10%
Gene at 10%
Ready Player One at 75% (this will be the first to finish)
Difficulty of Being Good at 30% (don't remember. will read from the beginning whenever I pick it)

I looked for it on Google. It is wonderful place! I hope you enjoyed it there.
89. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic - ★★★☆☆
90. Afterwards - ★★☆☆☆ (wife's reco)
91. City of Thieves - ★★★½☆ (Manju's reco)
Fun Home has been the most impactful of these. Have rated it 3 stars but comes highly recommended for various reasons.
And here I am loading my shelves with some more goodies :

Mythology and interconnected stories was all it took to convince me get this. By the way have never read anything by Vikram Chandra. And Maximum City by Suketu Mehta might be the first pick from this lot... I keep seeing it in most of the lists.

I hope you will like the end more than I did. Do you know the feeling when you read such a good book, waiting to see how it will end and then the last chapter is a failure? I felt so cheated by the author :-(

I know how bad that situation is. A couple of recent examples :
A Fine Balance is one such example where many people hate it because of its ending.
One Part Woman is another case.
Fortunately I loved them both and hopeful I don't get the bad feel for red earth as well....
