The setting is old west Missouri right aft the Civil War, Jenny is coming from Georgia to be a school teacher for a small town. She isn't very attractive and walks with a limp. On the train to her new job there is a train robbery. She accidentally sees the face of one of the robbers. Turns out he lives in the same town she is teaching at. He decides to marry her so that she can't testify against him in court. They fall in love. She has a past that explains her limp and why she is so afraid of men.
