Anyone read any Sherlock Holmes mysteries? Are they dark and gory? Do they describe the murders when they are happening?

Yes, no, and no. I read all of the Sherlock Holmes stories years ago and loved them. I wouldn't hesitate to let my teens read them, although I would talk to them about the drug usage by Holmes. If you like watching video productions based on books, I highly recommend the Sherlock Holmes TV shows and movies starring Jeremy Brett. He was the perfect Holmes. I decided to read the books because of those shows. Jeremy Brett page at IMDB
