I googled the author but there was more than one with that name. Yes, I agree that Trump is a reflection of the voting populace. That is the beauty of democracy, we get the government we deserve.

Discusses the John Fuglesang - Dream On - revisit of Tocqueville's journey
Tocqueville talks about tyranny taking over this way:
"Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary (care taking) power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratification...It would be like the authority of a parent, if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood, but it seeks on the contrary to keep them...in perpetual childhood: it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing. This power does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguished, and stupefied a people, till each nation is reduced to be nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals."
They believe that with the rise of corporate controlled media - Tocqueville's nightmare is becoming our reality. They were concerned that none of the real issues were discussed in this past election. And it was from Tocqueville's book that the concept of the American dream was born. Fuglesang said that every stop he asked the question - Do you believe in the American dream and what does that mean to you? Many feel that they have gone from thriving to surviving.
But Tocqueville also said that - "No American is devoid of a yearning desire to rise."
"It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it" --George Carlin
