Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I have finished and honestly I don't know how to rate it yet. 3.5 stars, maybe close to 4.
I loved the body language with poses for every single thing (permission, contrition, apology, thanks, etc.) and the way the author describes the inner struggles of the characters. There is so much of human nature embedded in this work! I loved the way the inner struggles of the characters were described, the question of what is good and what is wrong in almost everything they do. I loved the emotion, the question of morality. This book is incredible from all these points of view.
However, just like Emma, I couldn't really connect with any of the characters and hope I'll find someone to root for in the remaining books of the quartet.
I will be definitely reading the rest of the series.

Through chapter 10, a little over halfway. So this ended now it would be a 5* for me. Dagger and Coin which I loved I gave the first four books all 4*'s and the last one 5*'s more on a series roundup. I'm obviously in the minority but I find the plot and characters so engaging. I love his writing style.

Quinn | 460 comments I am trying to decide which book to read first this or traitor's blade. My school kept me busy.

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Just finished this. I'd probably rate it somewhere between 3.5 or 4 stars. A good story with excellent worldbuilding, but I found it hard to feel much empathy for any of the characters, although curiously I did end up feeling quite sorry for Heshai - he struck me as a man who was in way over his head and was duped into carrying out a terrible act, but his general 'patheticness' irritated me.

I'm going to read the sequel before I give my ratings.

I finished yesterday. I simply love it. The eastern culture and body language, the characters, the plot..........all so unique to anything I've read in a long time.
