Don't waste time trying to conquer obscure backwaters and hidden by-ways. It's difficult enough to make a splash on all the most popular venues like the ebook market. It's brutal!
So why waste time & energy hunting down stray, 'hypothetical buyers out there' when really its true that all 'the obvious' markets predominate over people's habits?
I don't know what marketing guides you're reading but what they're telling you sounds off-base to me. Believe me, you will have your hands full just trying to succeed on Amazon, B&N, Goodreads, etc.
'Thinking outside the box' implies that there's some kind of shortcut around challenge of book promotion. Well, it's just not so. Marketing for authors is akin to 'having a second job' once you've done first job of writing the book in the first place. And it's so tough, you won't have time to worry about running down remote, scattered buyers.
But oh well. Just my opinion. Anyway. If you insist on a practical answer which addresses the question you're asking, I would offer these ideas:
Online:
paintball websites
camping websites
survivalist websites
hunting websites
tactical gear websites
gaming websites
thriller book review websites
Offline:
camping equipment retailers
flea markets
gun & archery shops
game & recreation centers
bootcamps, fitness camps
police equipment retailers
Army Navy surplus stores
But again, I just don't think 'obscure' websites or brick&mortar coffee-shops are worth your effort. People get books from Amazon these days; almost universally. Sad to say, but true.
