I consider a book clean if it has NO (not even occasional) profanity, and no graphic sex scenes (like Harlequin novels). As a Christian I also object to New Age and paranormal themes although non-Christians don't seem to mind as long as it is clean. Some object to graphic blood and gore. Some don't.

Amanda (amandalyn) | 114 comments I consider a book clean if it has no harsh language, graphic violence, explicit sex scenes. If sex and violence are mentioned or implied but not discussed with detail, I still consider it clean. I am also a Christian but do not object to paranormal content. I feel like that is more of a plot preference than an indicator of a clean read.

Amanda (amandalyn) | 114 comments As an example, if you have read Francine Rivers Mark of the Lion series...they contain many adult topics such as sex outside of marriage, abortion, domestic violence and gladiator arena violence, pedophilia and slavery. Yet despite all of this I still consider them clean reads. I am not sure if others would agree with me. I think they are mature books and are for mature readers for sure, but I still consider them clean.

EJ Johnson | 39 comments For me, clean can include a few mild swear words but no profanity (taking the Lord's name in vain). If there is violence it should be important to the story, and not be graphic. No descriptive sex, even if the couple are married. Mild kissing and hugging is ok. Acceptance of sexual immorality (sexual intimacy outside of marriage) is not clean and not acceptable to me even if it isn't described. Thinking of sexual situations and desiring them constantly also is not clean. I'm not sure of the definition of para-normal is but I don't like anything to do with devils or ghosts or "the undead." I don't think it makes it unclean, I just don't read it. I like fantasy and enjoy a well written magic filled book.
