I think I read it about 15 years ago. It was current/near future. Cover might have had a rocketship(sic)shuttle on it.

I am actually reading it right now - it's . I can't get enough of Michael Flynn.

Yeah, it's definitely Flynn's series. There's a sequel that takes place several decades later in that series, by the way The Wreck of The River of Stars

It's a distant sequel - none of the same characters from the first books, but a lot of places and things are named after characters in the first books (like hobartium and Port Rosario for example)
