Very interesting Alex. I like that. :)

Oh and really sorry for your mom. I hope what's wrong with her and that she gets well soon. *hugs*

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 443 comments Sounds good! I like it! Hugs!!

Jessica Jesinghaus (jessjesinghhaus) | 49 comments I'll be keeping you and your mom (heck, your whole family) in my thoughts. Praying everything gets better / healthier soon! *hugs*

As for the vamp concept, I dig it. I love twists on the vamp trope, especially since I threw my hat in that ring with one of my projects. Yours sounds particularly interesting, the potential with your mad-scientist research into lengthening the human lifespan could be great writing fuel! Can't wait to read what you come up with.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 443 comments P.S. Healing hugs and prayers for your Mom, you, and your family. Hugs!

Will be praying for you and your mom, Alex.

Like the new story idea as well.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Glad to hear your mother is doing better. And I will read the heck out of a new take on vampires! That's actually one of my favorite genres that should exist.

message 157: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) LOL! Now we're on the same page. My vamps are scientific and my zombies were a result of fungus with psychotropic effects being on a space shuttle that was blown out if the sky.

.."

Glad to hear they stabilized her with meds. The not knowing is hard. I hope that when they find out, it will ease your worries.

To go back on the vampire stuff, I do love reading all the different lore authors create. I have nothing against Dracula of course, but why use the same story line when you can make a different one? :)

message 159: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Oh! I like that! Interesting as far as not being able to use doors. Gotta wonder how long they would stand there, starving, before they figured out something? I tend to stay away from the gore whenever possible, which is why I don't read a lot of the standard zombie tales, but I love when books dive into the moral issues of monsters.

I am lucky. Most vampire stories I have read lately were innovative and not the common trend. Although one of my favorite vampire TV show wasn't so different from the lore aside that they could walk in the sun with sunglasses and covered their skin as much as they could. They could not stay there too long because it was destroying them slowly (no bursting into fire). There was one show that the MC was stuck in the sun and had to fight with his inner self survival instinct not to kill the kid he was protecting. Have you ever watched Moonlight with Alex O'Loughlin?

Zombies could go on hibernation mode and be revived by the smell of food. (I think I've read something about that though.)

Moonlight was only one season (2007).

I've read a few Anita Blake but please don't crucify me if I say I stopped after two. it wasn't really my thing. (And to think I had bought like ten of them. :/ Good thing I got them at Half Price Store!)

I think they do that to give them a weakness. As for the coffins...nowadays, you'd think they'd find super duper looking coffins at least. :P BTW in Moonlight they sleep in freezers not coffins. :P

message 163: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) I kind of like the idea of vamps that are straight up dead during the day, but I admit, I usually like that idea when it's used for comedic effect. ;-)

message 164: by Jane (new)

Jane Jago | 1015 comments Alex is writing a vamp
But not one who's gonna be damp
A hero sublime
Who is nice all the time
Although from the bloodsucker camp

message 165: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) LOL! Jane is on a tear tonight!

Sorry about your mom. Keeping you guys in my happy thought file.

It does suck when loved ones are ill. My wife is dealing with so many issues... but it actually helps my writing. I feel so out of control and helpless when it comes to what's happening to her, so I like to get lost in a world where I can have total control.

message 167: by Alexis (new)

Alexis | 256 comments I hope things work out for your mom, Alex. Will tbe vampires stories be pure mysteries or are you thinking of throwing a bit of romance in there?

I currently have a cheap notepad but I'm after something more organised so I don't lose track of the ideas ..."

I like your thinking...

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 12 comments I'm always late to parties! :-(

Glad your mum seems to be stable.

I'm just editing my own vampires.
Mine aren't the usual kind. And there's witches. Actually, there's more magickal beings than you can shake a wand at ;-) Including a dragon.

Good luck with yours. Let me know if you need a beta for it xx

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 443 comments Alex, you could also print out this thread and highlight all the stuff you want to transfer to your notebook. I love notebooks with colorful colors and colorful pens. Hugs.

message 174: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Hope your mom is doing well (I'm so behind on comments.)

One thing I like about the traditional vampire is the angst and moral dilemma of killing to survive. Sure, we do it, when we kill animals, but that doesn't phase most people. Not like killing another person.

Will your vamps have any moral dilemma in their life cycle?

I randomly had a new idea about satanists in a small town that is partial memoir... so I understand it when an idea bites your butt.

message 175: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments Sounds fun. And you've put lots of thought into it!

I always hated the ideas that some creature type was automatically evil. So, glad you're not building them that way.

Well, it would be set in the late 80s, when the event actually happened. (these Satanists are actually a personal experience of mine, when I was a wee lass, but I plan to fantisize it.) I hadn't thought about modernizing it up 30 years.

message 176: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments There are more YA books set in the 80s. Eleanore and Park is one of them, which was a YA romance.

I don't think cell phones would work for this story. Cell phones change so much.

message 177: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments I've read those too! I don't read much YA because often times I find it... trite? I don't know, isn't for me. Though I've written YA under another hat. I just think the genre has a glut right now. But that is where I've found most of my 80s/90s centric novels.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Yeah, the forum has been a bit quiet lately and I'm as much to blame as anyone. First of all, congrats on all of your releases and your gig with Medium! And congrats for sticking with your diet twelve days already. It may not seem a lot, but I know how difficult it is to get started. In my experience, it gets a LOT easier once you start to see results (granted, I've yet to figure out how to stick with it and stay at my target). I know you've got it in you to succeed with everything you are taking on and that's pretty amazing.

message 189: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Alex wrote: "What I need is something that tells me I'm on the right path, that if I stick with what I'm doing I'll see a loss of x kilos in such and such a time, that would really help."

I can actually help with that somewhat! At least for me, I've noticed the best way is to count calories and be mindful of your carbohydrate/fat/protein ratio. I will strongly advise not to jump immediately to the lowest calorie intake for a day because even though you'll lose and lose a lot, you're way more likely to gain it back (personal experience). I use the My Fitness Pal app and keep track of most everything. I admit it's a pain to be completely diligent, but it does help.

message 190: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) If you've got enough room to swing a kettlebell, I'd say get one and a resistance band. Those are both good for stationary cardio. Sounds like you're already on your way! Best of luck!
