My apologies to everyone. I thought I had adjusted this but I guess I didn't. The title for this month is Ghosts.

Beverly (bjbixlerhotmailcom) | 78 comments I just finished reading "Ghosts" this week. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was so great it would garner a Newbery.
As I read the story, I understood all the ghosts to be ancestors of the Mexican Hispanics who lived in this town, not ghosts of any Native Americans, whether there were any who lived at this fictitious mission or not, despite any articles to the contrary. Why would these ghosts appear if they weren't coming to be honored by their descendants who live in the town? The ghosts in this story were attracted to the ofrendas made by their relatives, and there were no NAs in the story making ofrendas. Anyway, the story also dealt with family issues dealing with chronic illness, and the younger sister wanting to meet with the ghost of her own grandmother (also not NA). Anyway, as I said, I enjoyed the story, although on the first page that showed the ghosts, I thought that they looked like the ghosts of earthworms, or possibly snakes.

Caren (carenb) | 37 comments I don't think "Ghosts" is Newbery worthy, though surprisingly, I did like it.

Ana Marlatt | 72 comments I enjoyed Ghosts. I don't think it is Newberry worthy. My students enjoy reading the book- it is often checked out! I know there are some historical concerns. I appreciate being enlightened about these concerns here... otherwise I would not have known! It is definitely something to think about.

Travis (wmtravis) | 19 comments I know that there's been some questions of historical accuracy and cultural appropriation floating around this title, but it certainly has been popular with my students (as others have said, it rarely stays on the shelf!). I'm all for graphic novels getting some medal love, but I'm just not sure this is the one that deserves to get it.
