I'd look at it to see how I could strengthen it. Were they meh just because the topic wasn't for them? Or was it a 'problem' with the story?

Good luck! And Congrats on the new book!

You should peer at new fashions unsurely
It just is not right
That your jeans are so tight
That your ass makes young men think impurely

Or an underpaid marital chore
You shouldn't enjoy
A naughty young boy
On a rug on a campervan floor

In the best joint in town
Eating oysters and tiramisu

Jane Jago | 1015 comments DRAGONHEART

In Dragonheart there are no second chances

The dragon spiralled down out of the sunset, with the orange light setting his skin aflame so that he looked as if he was made of oil and steel. Tia stood and watched, wryly noting the Diamond Throne banner, whilst being careful not to move or speak until the shining one's feet touched the ground and he furled his wings.

She bowed her head in a formal gesture of welcome.
"Greetings lady," the voice inside her head was deeper than she expected. This must be a full male, which meant he would be a shifter as well. He would bear watching. Carefully.
"Greetings, bright one."
The dragon regarded her out of whirling multi-faceted eyes before bowing his head. The silence lengthened, and seemed to Tia that her uninvited guest was trying to make her nervous with his lack of comment. She broke the silence in a deliberately small voice.
"What does my lady mother want of me?"
"Naught. She would merely ascertain that you are well."
Tia cast down her eyes so he could not see her contempt.
"Perhaps my lord dragon would care to assume his human form and venture inside, to where we can speak in more comfort."
If it was possible for a dragon to look puzzled, he did so.
"May one ask what makes you think this dragon has a human form?"
For a moment Tia dropped her shield of humility.
"Who am I?" she raised a narrow dark eyebrow.
He thought about that one for a moment before dipping his head.
"One is ashamed."
Tia was at great pains not to show her contempt for that remark.
"I apologise. It was not my intention to cause you disquiet."
She felt the dragonish laughter as a vibration that ran right through her skeleton.
"My name is M'a'tsu, and I would be honoured to visit with you."
Tia curtseyed.
"I will leave you to make the change in privacy."
She turned and made her way across the flower strewn meadow to the grey stone buildings that clustered at the base of the cliffs and the stone stairway to the temple.

M'a'tsu watched her go, enjoying her long-legged stride and the way her body moved under the simple linen robe she wore. He found himself fantasising about tying her up with the rope of her own black hair, which hung in a braid almost to her knees. Giving himself a sharp inward reminder that he wasn't there for pleasure, he took the necessary time to compose his mind before making the change.

Once he was in his human form, he stretched for a moment enjoying the different sensations afforded by thinner skin. He looked down at his muscular perfection and briefly considered remaining unclothed but the pleasure of the rapidly cooling air against his human flesh had to be balanced against the possibility of giving offence. Accordingly he shifted himself leather trews and a waistcoat, electing to remain barefoot for the sheer delight of the feel of grass beneath him................

What there will be, I think, is a series of interconnected short stories centred on the inhabitants of Dragonheart. The bad dragons are brainstorming me

Jane Jago | 1015 comments The latest dragon tale is in progress....

“And keep your eyes open for a dragon on a Harley Davidson.”
Constable Willet stopped in his tracks.
“A what?”
The desk sergeant looked up from his computer.
“You heard me.”

Outside the station, the handsome young policeman looked down at his partner. Badger cocked an intelligent ear.
“What’s your problem?”
“Dragons can't ride motorcycles.”
The canine cop stopped in his tracks.
“You may have a point.”
Willet grinned.
“See, I'm not completely stupid.”

He wasn't to know what Badger thought of that because the distinctive note of a Harley Davidson engine split the air. The motorcycle careered around the corner, rearing up onto one wheel and mounting the pavement before hurtling down the road bouncing off street furniture as it went.

Badger sat back on his haunches.
“That proves your point. Dragons really can't ride motorbikes.”

Willet grasped Badger’s harness in one hand as he unfurled his wings.
“Operation intercept,” he said happily as they took to the air.

It didn't take long to overhaul the motorcycle, as the riding became more and more eccentric with the Harley yawing from side to side and scraping its footrests at every movement. When they caught up, it had just made a sharp left onto a mercifully deserted football pitch. Willet made a long arm and pulled out the kill switch. The engine died and the bike slewed to a halt before slowly toppling over onto its side. The stubby golden dragon just managed to slip from the saddle in time to avoid being trapped by the fallen machine.

Badger gave the rider a very stern look.
“What's on here, my laddo,” he said firmly.
“Steady down Badger. It's only a hatchling. And I don't think it's a laddo.”

And then the sky was full of panicky dragons bugling their alarm and distress. A good dozen circled Willet, Badger and the hatchling making agitated noises.

“Thief, thief,” the biggest one cried in a strangely high-pitched voice. “Thieves and kidnappers. Where are the rest of our little ones?”
Willet knew that dragons broadcasting distress could easily spark a riot, so he stepped forward.
“Calm down and stop being silly. Nobody kidnapped anybody, although it does seem that those charged with the care of your hatchlings have failed in their duties.”
The lead dragon turned an unfriendly eye on him.
“How does a human dare to so address a dragon?”

Badger laughed sardonically.
“Hush now,” Willet admonished, “and stand back, I'm going to have to make the change before this lot get right out of hand.”
Badger backed off and Willet flowed into his true form.
