He's sort of a mix of various authors I've seen go on Dick Cavett and fight with each other, such as Gore Vidal, William F. Buckley and Norman Mailer. His writing is considered, by some, genius. By others, long-winded drivel. Personality-wise, he's the ultimate boor.

Which one(s) of your stories do you consider literary as opposed to general fiction?"

Um... if we go with the notion that literary means style over plot, I would go with Austism, George Stew, Old Pops' Last Beer, Lazarus Wept and The Six People You Meet In Creative Writing Workshop as literary. Ms. Lucky, Bonny Truman, Ladybug Boy, Party At Larry's, The Asphalt Carpet and Who Wrote Alice Hatter are all general fiction.

Most of the stories I'm happiest with are my literary ones. They tend to be the hardest to write, though, as I really have to nurture them to find a way to make it more than a story.

More on that soon...

George Stew, which is free this weekend (the 17th and 18th) is the best example of what I was talking about in my last comment. For some time I knew I wanted to do a story about some homeless people, but held off until I found an interesting angle. After a bit, I thought it would be interesting to make it a love story and ideas began to develop, but I wasn't there, yet.

I drive a van as part of my other job. I would go by a vacant lot frequently. There used to be a small shack in the lot. I found myself staring at it a lot. One day as I passed, I had the twist I needed for the story about the homeless people. Instead of just a love story, it's also a story of hate. The theme became more important than the rest of the story. In it, the two main characters are very much in love, but most everyone in Noah City hates them because of their relationship. The twist? I never say exactly what it is about George and Robin that offends so many people. I am hoping that readers will fill in the blanks for themselves... and maybe question if any kind of love is wrong or is all love good?

Thank you to everyone! I'm still a bit amazed it was even nominated. But, Christina did it! Christina did it! (Mean mod INDEED!)

Alex, I am going to use that award in probably more ways than one. If I recall, there's supposed to be some kind of graphic I can add to my cover, too.

message 85: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments My 2 pence... I love literary fiction... To me, it's the writing voice and style and often there is some 'deeper meaning' to it. I don't think it's hoity toity!!! But, there are tons of literary fiction that are BORING, so I just read the good stuff. Most of it could also be pigeon holed into some other genre if you tried.

I used to break books into two categories. Literary and genre. Genre often being Plot Focused and Literary being Character Focused... but I don't think that works anymore.

message 86: by Jane (new)

Jane Jago | 1015 comments Dwayne. Just read. And reviewed. George Stew. Loved it. It has a way of worming its way into your very heart.

message 87: by Dwayne, That's Dr. Cannibal To You (new)

Dwayne Fry | 564 comments Mod
Get some rest, Nathan.

Thank you Thomas and Charles!

Nat, personally, I will give most anything a try. I seem to enjoy books more if they encompass more than one genre. Example: if it's sci-fi, I kind of need a mystery, some romance, maybe a western feel to it.

Yeah, I could see that - Literary being more character focused. If we define it that way, most everything I do is Literary. My plots are generally nothing special or terribly original, but I like to develop deep, intricate or larger-than-life characters, depending on the piece.

Jane, thank you so much. I'll run off and read your review... right now!

message 88: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 614 comments I think many stories span genres as well. I think, though, if it's genre fiction, the genreness of it needs to stand out strongly (to please me, anyway). I sometimes feel gypped when something is touted as a fantasy, but really it's a romance with one character who has horns or something. I want more to the plot and world, but most agents nowadays are really wanting character focused stories, because we care about characters and connect better with those types of stories.

I know! And then you try to pick the best tags and I never figure out how effective they are. It feels a bit like a crap shoot at times.

CB and Nat, Agreed. It is frustrating at times when something could fit easily into multiple genres.

Justin, You're in my pile of authors I need to get to soon, too. I have a couple of your books, just haven't gotten to them.

Dan, You too.

And, so, for the month of December I’ve been giving away some of my personal favorite stories. We started with Ladybug Boy and then came Lazarus Wept.

Last week I offered George Stew, but did not do much promoting of it. I will offer it this weekend, for one day, on Dec. 25. Yes, Christmas Day. https://goo.gl/dc6CET

And this week I have to do something creepy. My second favorite of all my stories is a little one I titled The Six People You Meet In Creative Writing Workshop. However, this is one of those titles I do not like to give away for free. But, do not dispair! Along with George Stew, I will be giving a book away this weekend. So, in substitution of The Six People… take a copy of Happy Clown Burger: Volume One. https://goo.gl/ZOXD2W It will be free from Dec. 24th to Dec. 26th!

Next week… my very favorite of all the stories I’ve published thus far…

And, next month we go the other direction. I’ll be giving away my top four least favorite of all the stories I’ve published thus far. This is the crap I almost wish I had not bothered with. Keep your eyes out, download them, cringe and be ready to pelt me with one star reviews.

Been reading Miss Addy Vice. Very humorous and satisfying. Remind me never to write to her for any kind of help!

*slurps coffee loudly*

Where did you get such an offbeat idea for the book? So original.

*shuffles feet while waiting*

Probably in part reading lots of MAD magazines as a kid, watching lots of SNL and SCTV as a teen and young adult. I learned that everything can be parodied. Also, in my late twenties or early thirties, I read a lot of Ann Landers columns and, well, I always got a kick out of it when she made some huge blunder in her advice and her readers would flood her with angry letters.

If you like that one, you might like Ambrosia Corazón-Reine's Writing It Right For Writers wherein I am lampooning horrible writer's guides.

Yep.

Should be out next month or so.

message 98: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Hurry up with that one, dammit!

The book, not the coffee. Take your time with the coffee. You wouldn't want a scalded tongue.

By the way, I have this story nagging at me that is outside my wheelhouse. My first thought was "pitch it to Dwayne." But nah,I'm going to try to write a Dwayne Fry book. That's right, Fry-fic is a thing now.

Today I obtained a copy of Stephen King's "On Writing" from the library, just so I can dink around with a parody of one part of it.

Sneak preview good enough for now?

This is unedited, by the way.

You are a bitch. I don’t mean you’re a female dog. I don’t mean you’re a malicious, overbearing woman. I mean “bitch” in the way it is often used in a men’s maximum security prison. We talked about friends and family and other people who secretly do not care about you or your writing. Now we focus on those who do care. You are a bitch to your agent. You are bitch to your editor. You a bitch to your publisher. Oh, and make no illusion. When you have fans, even a few, you will be their bitch, too. Once you have a best seller or two, forget about it. You will forever be trying to please your fans and keep their attention. If you do one book out of the ordinary, one book that they do not expect from you, prepare to bend over and take it hard. It’s over. You can’t win.

You said, "But nah,I'm going to try to write a Dwayne Fry book. That's right, Fry-fic is a thing now."

Brr... This is scarier than having to look into a mirror.
