Melpomene, do you think the heroine is the boy's governess or the boy's mother (the hero's sister-in-law)?
The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan?
One Amazon reviewer says: "Sebastian's brother, Benedict is dying, and he dearly wants to impress him with his worth, so he can be his nephew, Harry's Guardian." Also: "The heroine, Violet - the Countess of Cambry, is a botanist and evolutionary biologist, and one of the foremost scientific minds of her generation. But in secret. It's the Victorian era after all...and women just don't do these sorts of things. So she has a little arrangement, Sebastian presents her work as his own. She does the research, the writing, and the discovery and he presents and signs off on it."

What I do remember is that the hero has a very difficult relationship with his older brother (who is a duke? Marquess? Not sure). Said brother has caught a fatal disease and doesn't know how much longer he has left to live. He has a young (5 to 7 years old?) son; his wife passed away some time ago. The boy has an active imagination, but his father stifles it because he thinks it's inappropriate.
The hero, who has always been a bit of a rogue, has to straighten up himself and prove to his brother that is he can be responsible, and that he is the ideal guardian of his nephew. However, everything the hero tries earns his brother's disapproval. At one point he comes up with a scheme (something about ships and trade) that really angers his brother.
Towards the end of the novel, the brothers hash it out, and it turns out the older brother has always been jealous of how lucky the hero is in life. Something about how everything is pretty much handed to him? Jealous about how easily the hero makes friends and how clever he is?
I've been struggling to remember the title of this book for a while. Any sort of help would be gladly appreciated!
