Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments I have tried twenty times over the past couple of days to set up an ad on The Fussy Librarian's newsletter - and all of them have failed, after I spent time making sure each text box entry was correct.

When I use the Browse button to locate the cover (200 x 300 pixels as recommended) image, first it accepts it fine - name listed properly - but when I click Submit, it tells me there's a problem - and the image name is no longer there.

Over and over.

I even went down to an eight-character name for the jpeg file (Windows machines used to require that). No dice. (PC1small.jpeg).

Anyone else have trouble? Any suggestions? I've sent them a help request, but time slots are disappearing, and people here have been most helpful in the past.

Thanks!

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I used to have trouble too Alicia. In the end I emailed him and he uploaded one grabbing it from somewhere. He'll help out.

I don't use them too often but when I do I now don't seem to have a problem.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Thanks, Anna. I appreciate the response. It will keep me from pulling more hair out.

Automatic scheduling is so much better - but you feel so frustrated when a slot slips by that you wanted to pay for, because the website won't let you.

I'll keep trying.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'll link this in the morning thread. Perhaps others will also have advice.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Thanks, Patti.

I don't know how long it will take FL to respond, but I'm sure they have lots of things to do. The slot I was aiming for was today, but there are more in the future, and I need to do some advertising.

I think.

I'm still leery of ads - you pull in people who expect something else, and they can leave very odd reviews.

But I'm almost out of other ideas.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments With Fussy, you have to book at least a month in advance, or at least it was like that up til a few weeks ago when I last checked. He (Jeffrey, the owner of the site) said he was going to do something about it. I hope he has.

Ann Girdharry (anngirdharry) I'm sure Jeffrey will get back to you as soon as he can.

I really like FL, and so far, it's been one of the best performing promo sites I've used - so it's worth persisting.

Having to book well in advance is a bit of a problem with them all...(depending on your genre)

certainly it's not one that has stuck in mind. Admittedly I just looked at it now and by definition none of my books are eligible because none of them have ten or more reviews on Amazon

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I suppose you've tried clearing your cache Alicia?

I will try clearing cookies, and restarting my computer, but it is irritating because I have to fill in a whole lot of information before I can hit Submit - and then it balks.

Light bulb moment! Try submitting with ONLY the cover file, then, when it complains (but has accepted the cover), give it the rest.

Worth a try. Thanks, Rosemary.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Cookies cleared. Nope. Still 'loses' the cover when I hit Submit.

Will wait to see if they get back to me.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Have you tried clearing your cache though? (different from cookies) I had trouble uploading a jpg to a website recently, because an old version was being stored in MY browser's cache. Cleared cache, problem solved :)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments It's not supposed to be a problem on Macs. I'll try.

message 15: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Just remembered: I don't mess with them. The last time I had to spend hours getting back to all my preferred sites.

I'll restart. That's as far as I go. It should get rid of obvious junk.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I'm on a Mac :)
Chrome drop down menu > Clear Browsing Data> then select cached images and files in the check boxes. Won't affect anything else

message 17: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Nuked the cached images and files.

Then realized I use Firefox to access most things, including FL.

Will go look for equivalent way to get rid of images.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Try using a different browser, like Chrome or Safari.
I find I sometimes have to switch between the two on my iPad if sites are being arseyarses.

Oh look. My iPad has created a new word. Arseyarses. I like it!

message 19: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments I will try Chrome - one of them has to work. I have Safari in reserve, because it is much better when I'm searching image databases (like photos). Otherwise, mostly Firefox.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help. I will. I haven't tried again since I restarted the computer yet. Nor have I tried other browsers. It's on the list.

message 22: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Did it again - using Chrome, and after a restart: it won't take the cover file after I click Submit, when it seems to have no trouble finding it when I Browse.

Cover is 200 x 300 pixels, as recommended, and has the name
PC1small.jpeg (8 letters in name, jpeg extension - as suggested).

I'll hope to hear from them, but no one has answered my email to them yet.

It takes me about ten minutes each time I try, just to fill in the spaces, check the availability, etc.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments How frustrating!

message 24: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments I have not had any response from FL in two days. Maybe their contact form doesn't work for me, either.

It IS frustrating.

If I could just get the ad in once, I believe there is a way to make changes without uploading the whole thing again, and I would be using that.

From what I've read, it is best for the kind of fiction I write - after Bookbub which I have little hope of accessing.

Any other suggestions for a book classified as psychological literary fiction? I've also considered women's fiction and contemporary romance.

Feel free to chime in if you've read it and have an opinion.

Electronic review copies available on request for anyone CONSIDERING writing a review here and on Amazon.

I know I need to market.
