Lara | 296 comments Hell no. Hell yes? Hell maybe I'll finish the book this time.

Book club family has spoken and chosen the next topic: it's Hell. Plain ol' hell. Not other people, as JPS or JH would say, just hell, you know, that place you hear about in mythological writings, the one place where you can't deny climate change is a real thing as it's really friggin hot.

Post your suggestions about hell and we'll make a doodle out of it.

message 2: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments My hellish suggestion will be Damned by Chuck Palahniuk (also because I want to give him another chance after having read Snuff)

message 3: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 126 comments my suggestion is Swamplandia! by karen russell; i've been meaning to read something of hers for a while (oh, the book guilt!), and apparently there is a hell-themed amusement park in this one.

message 4: by Tania (new)

Tania U I'm gonna be really boring: Inferno

message 5: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments I suggest an easy read i hope, and Naoimis favorite :)

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Easy read for Xmas :)

Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett

message 6: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 126 comments woo! :) thanks, katja.

message 7: by Tania (new)

Tania U To Cordelia: I've never bought any book through goodreads... Although there are an Amazon company so maybe there are some buttons embedded.... Personally I like that they added audible samples to goodreads - very convenient for me because i mostly listen to books. Maybe someone else knows more about your question!

message 8: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 126 comments well, goodreads is amazon, so.. i'm sure you could connect your accounts if you wanted. when i view book pages i get little 'purchase from' tiles under the detailed info section (pub year, awards, etc) - does that not show up for you?

message 9: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments well on my account under thé book i have "buy on amazon.fr" and from there i have buy in one click for kindle - but i prefer the good Old search way )

Hmm...I really want to read The Damned or Swamplandia! I'm not going to propose a book, but please believe me I looked around. There are a lot of classics set in some version of hell, but hell, I say hell with it

message 11: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments I'll probably doodle it up this weekend so if you have suggestions, do tell us now or forever hold your peace

Lara | 296 comments Here's yer Doodle! http://doodle.com/poll/ah5vv7vnwnhdhgze

As always you can vote for up to two books including your own suggestion. Cheerio

message 13: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments If you're celebrating Christmas, merry Chrimbo to you!
Doodle's been up way past its bedtime and it looks like we're gonna read Palahniuk's Damned. It's about a dead 13 year old who works as a telemarketer in Hell (you're welcome).

message 14: by Tania (new)

Tania U Isn't it a nice way to end this year on a high note!

message 15: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
High like the voice of a pre-pubescent boy screaming into a phone

message 16: by Tania (new)

Tania U Justin must know what it sounds like...

message 17: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments I'm not sure if we're still Doodlin' for the meeting date... If not we could make it a late January meeting (Mimi will you still be on this continent?)

message 18: by Mimi (new)

Mimi | 126 comments yup, you're all stuck with me for just a little longer...

message 19: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod

message 20: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments to change the thing - the last Tuesday of Jan ?

message 21: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments 31st? Works for me

message 22: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Penciling it in in my calendar now...

message 23: by Agnes (new)

Agnes (verlisant) | 8 comments Would that be Jan 31st ?

message 24: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments @Agnes: yes!

Hi Lara,
I am new on Googreads Paris and am not quite sure how things work but I'd love to come to the next meeting provided it is not held too late. Where will it take place ?
I look forward to meeting Goodreads memebers.

message 26: by Tania (new)

Tania U Jan 31st is perfect for me!

message 27: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments Hi Agnes, welcome, we haven't decided yet on the meeting place but it'll be announced on this thread!

message 28: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments I'll pencil that date in, but I have work that day (3-11) – they may cancel, so don't worry either way! Anyone got the book? E-reader that is? Happily read more Chuck!

message 29: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Yes Justin we all individually purchased the ebook, is that not what you intend?

message 30: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Yes, René, it is. In fact, I have just bought the limited-edition, gold-embossed, 3D, mocha-skinny-latte version.

message 31: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Man, Chuck really didn't like the English Patient

message 32: by Alan (new)

Alan | 172 comments Mod
Gracious me, I have 20 days to read it AND I'm free on that evening! I'll be there!

message 33: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments and he didn't like the breakfast club either... are there things that palanik liked actually ? or he was instantly criticizing just everything ...

message 34: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments We're all just loving this book aren't we

message 35: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments it's like going back to my teenagehood and just remembering the whining of a friend in her red days.... like really )

message 36: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
I'm legit liking this book, actually. And Tania, I think he did like the Breakfast Club, just not the English Patient. I like how his description of hell is the kind of thing people whine about hyperbolically

message 37: by Algebraist (new)

Algebraist | 1 comments hello,
i would like to join for the next meeting for the first time , do i have to register somewhere?
greetings

message 38: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments Hi, no registration necessary, we'll post all the details for the meeting on this thread!

message 39: by Tania (new)

Tania U Tania, René? Did you just mix up Katja with Tania?! Do you think that you can mix up one Russian with another just like this, with nuclear impunity? Who do you think you are?! A Canadian Doctor Strangelove?

message 40: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
@Tania no, I was saying it loudly to you to shame Katja by publicly contradicting what she'd just said while simultaneously not acknowledging her?

message 41: by Agnes (new)

Agnes (verlisant) | 8 comments Is this conversation a private joke ?!

message 42: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
@Agnes yes :)

message 43: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments And why would you like to shame me, i wonder ?
You can not just shame someone like that

message 44: by Tania (new)

Tania U Indeed, René, the days when you could first-worldly shame Russians just like this are OVER.

message 45: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Well I'm not American so you don't get to order me around and bully me and hector me and browbeat me and stuff

message 46: by Tania (new)

Tania U No need to do all these verbs to you - just expect your account to be hacked and your dirty sexual kompromat to be washed in public.

message 47: by Tania (new)

Tania U Actually, were you American, it would be better (for you) as we are now BUDDIES.

message 48: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Sexual kompromat? Is that like a laundromat for sex? I want one!

message 49: by Lara (new)

Lara | 296 comments Are you guys fine with monopolizing the Café de l'Industrie again for Tuesday's meet?

message 50: by Agnes (new)

Agnes (verlisant) | 8 comments Where is the café and what time is the meeting ?
