If you've written a crime/mystery novel or a thriller you'd consider on the funnier side of things, this is the place to talk about it. Tell the group members what your book is about with a brief description or any other information you'd like to share.

NOTE: any advertising you'd like to do should be done in the appropriate thread under "In the Press, Blogs and Sites" here.

Sue Merrell (suemerrell) | 14 comments I spent almost 40 years working for newspapers and we always blamed weird phone calls and happenings on the full moon. This month, the full moon coincides with Friday the 13th. That double whammy superstition is the inspiration for Full Moon Friday, the third book in my Jordan Daily News Mystery Series.

The first book, Great News Town, is about a serial killer that terrorizes a small Chicago suburb in 1984, and the small town newspaper staff that covers the crimes and uncovers the killer. It was an honorable mention this year in the Writers Digest contest for Self-published books.

The second book, One Shoe Off, features the same newsroom about a year later. This time city editor Josie Braun is obsessed with an editor who disappeared thirty years earlier leaving only a shoe behind. It was a finalist last year for Amazon's Breakout Novel Award.

Although the subjects are serious, and a little tense in spots, there's a bit of humor too. Especially in this latest addition, Full Moon Friday. And many of the weirdest phone calls are based on stories from journalists and cops. Truth is stranger than fiction!

David Freas (quillracer) | 2954 comments From working with the public in the retail sector, I can vouch for the truth of the full moon - whacky behavior connection.

Some of the strangest working days I ever had were the day of or day after the full moon.

Do you have a summary of your book? This might be better under author events.

Sameer Kamat (sameerkamat) Just following the guidelines, Nancy.

In the first post, you've made it pretty clear what NOT to do.

one would think that, but obviously, not everyone reads the first post!

Sameer Kamat (sameerkamat) I hear you, Nancy.

As a social experiment, you could reward a well-behaved author with some added visibility within the group for their titles. And watch how quickly everyone else falls in line.

For best results, choose an exotic/international author :-P

Hi
A question and a comment:
The question: how is this "crime on the lighter side?"
The comment: my original post specifically stated no ad links. Can you please delete the ad link to your book? Thanks.

message 19: by Marja (new)

Marja McGraw (marja1) | 114 comments A crime can be on the lighter side when the author concentrates on solving the crime and the characters rather than the crime itself. One of the most difficult things to do in writing is to combine drama and humor, but it can be done. Just thought I'd add two cents.

message 20: by Marla (new)

Marla Bradeen (mbradeen) | 6 comments I've published three humorous mysteries, bordering on chick-lit. My most recent release, Secret Agenda , is about a woman who moves to a small town in search of justice for her dead fiancé.

I agree with Marja about lighter mysteries focusing more on the characters than the crime. The crime also tends not to be as callous. For example, someone might be murdered, but it's generally a more nonviolent murder rather than a cruel death preceded by ritualistic torture or something equally heinous.

M.R. Buster (mrbuster) | 1 comments I wrote my first book and it is up on Amazon. I would love to have readers/reviews.

Summary

Mahla Etan has just been given only a handful of weeks to live. What better to do than to take off to Sisters, Oregon with a crotchety old man, three bickering kids, and one smart-aleck husband? But one unexpected event suddenly turns her life upside down and she soon finds herself smack dab in the middle of a supernatural phenomenon.

John Martin (httpgoodreadscomjohn_martin) | 2 comments Lie of the Tiger Lie of the Tiger by John Martin Who Knew Tasmanian Tigers Eat Apples! Who Knew Tasmanian Tigers Eat Apples! by John Martin

I spent most of my working life as a newspaper journalist, which has given me a vast database of ideas for stories and characters. One of the enduring mysteries I dealt with was the Tasmanian tiger, which many people refuse to believe is extinct.
I remember receiving a postcard in the mail after I wrote a series of feature articles about a Tasmanian tiger hunter. One side of the postcard had a photograph of the tiger, and the other bore some scribbled words: 'John, this is as near to a Tasmanian tiger as you'll ever get.'
Turns out that was wrong.
I took the mystery of the tiger, mixed it with humour and some quirkly characters and my Windy Mountain funny mysteries series was born.
In the first novel, the officious mayor gets his comeuppance; in the latest a mysterious Irishman who looks a lot like the hero/villain in the first book arrives in town to take charge of the Tasmanian tiger museum.

Find out why accountants should do the books, not write one, especially if they work for a publisher.
My dark comedic mystery play, actually started as a comedy the mystery just developed by itself.
