Happy 2nd official day of winter, everyone!
To answer the candy question, I make "Black & White Buckeyes" (peanut butter balls dipped in white & dark chocolate); and Rum Raisin truffles (milk & dark chocolate). This year I also want to make coconut balls (snowballs), but the sprained foot may have just made that an after-Christmas treat. * insert eye roll here *
Jina...you don't fail if you set a goal you have no control over. And no matter how much effort you put in, you can't control how Heather's body responds, or how long it takes. Slowly, you're unlocking her potential, and that needs to be seen as a journey, not a goal. Trying harder will only wear you out and make you feel guilty, robbing you and Heather if the joy of spending precious Mother-daughter time together. You had no control over what caused her condition years ago, and you can't predict or control what happens next. I think you know that. So don't beat yourself up. Celebrate that you want what's best for her, and that you're giving her the best chance you possibly can. That's enough --- It truly is. Let the grief come and go without the guilt. I know how hard that is, but grief is a big enough burden without guilt. It's great that she has milestones and has shown improvement. Celebrate every one of those. Allow yourself the grace you deserve.

On the 8th day of Christmas...someone stole our big box of family gifts off my daughter's porch. We realized it yesterday when I got a message the package had been delivered by FedEx on Monday...and a message from Sarah asking when it was due to arrive. It was everything we got Layla for a Christmas plus a few items for everyone else.
I put money into her bank account and she's managed to replace most of the toys. We went to our local Farm supply store and found another stuffed horse, and when we told them what happened they gave us an extra toy for free. That's the beauty of small town businesses and kind people.
Today I'll replace the items I'd gotten for the rest of the family, and ship them out SIGNATURE REQUIRED. They live in such a rural area we never considered that thieves might follow the FedEx guy around. Painful holiday lesson learned.
On the 9th day of Christmas...
I sprained my foot running off the stress of the 8th day of Christmas. I'm hobbling like a bear with a spur in his paw. Cranky and slow.
And on we go to another day of Ho-Ho-WTF? (Pardon the language).
God bless

Paula~I am so sorry for your trials and tribulations this Christmas season but I thank you for sharing. No wonder you are a writer .. I am riveted!
Hope your New Year is a better one!

Thank you, Nancy! My writing coach tells me that nothing ever happens to a writer that goes to waste. Everything we experience ends up in a story. So I should be grateful for these anecdotes! LOL.
I hope you're having a terrific season. :-)

Dear Paula,
Thank you for what you said. Guilts a tricky thing. So sorry for the theft of the Christmas presents. Could it be possible they delivered to the wrong house in the first place. Thats happened to me before. I got the message that the package I had sent my sister was delivered but she said it hadnt gotten there. Two days later their neighbor brought the box over saying they (delivery company) had put the package in the garage when they werent home. Hopefully something like that happened and they will eventually get it.
Be kind to yourself and I hope the ankle heals quickly.
Love you,
Jina
Hi Jina! I have to say FedEx went above and beyond to follow up and they were amazing. And now for the stupid part...it was a family member that found and hid the package in a spare room, then suddenly remembered that this afternoon after everyone had search the neighborhood...and Sarah had been all over town replacing gifts. I thanked FedEx and the next time I'm in Va Beach I will thank them in person.
As for the step-mother-in-law who had the suspicious memory lapse...I suspected she was at the bottom of this from the get-go. She is ALSO a character that I plan to kill off in one of my future books. *insert villainous laugh here*
LOL. #WritersRevenge.
Seriously, We are grateful to have gotten it straightened out and also grateful for the dedication of the FedEx staff...in time for a hopefully quieter Merry Christmas!

Dear Paula,I am so glad the package turned up. Fedex is much better at customer service than UPS but what would we do without them. I would hope that the step-mom in law was just frazzled from all the holidays comings and goings and preparations for the days ahead and the memory lapse wasnt malicious. But I do know people like that. I end up praying that they find Jesus.
Love you,
Jina and the girls

Paula,
Looks like your step Mother in law stepped into my late Mother in law's place in the M.F. Mother in laws of all time ! I can't imagine putting your Daughter through all that. Coal in the stocking time.
Now with the way this year is going I guess I am not really surprised this happened! Last night I was baking my pumpkin pecan pie ,I went to check and it was almost finished, but the temperature showed lower. You got it my gas oven stopped working! The stove top still lights up. Thank goodness I was going to roast my prime rib in my electric roaster oven anyway, now I have to be creative with baking my dinner rolls ,I think I can bake them in the roaster oven when I take the roast out too rest.Everything else will have to go stovetop. Then my new power cord I bought for my computer a few months ago went out, that is what I get for buying a cheapo China knock off. So I ordered one made in the USA . So I am having to use my Kindle fire now.
Hope You all have a better day! LOVE Lola

Lola, you've found the perfect way to end 2016 -- appliance failure -- it happens around here all the time (our house is 33 years old and I think some of the appliances are now considered antiques!). As women, we are the masters at punting in tough situations (MUCH better than pro football kickers) - so I know your holiday feast will be delicious (it's already memorable). I'm sure I'll be back with some ridiculous Christmas catastrophe before the weekend is over.
A very Merry Christmas to you! xo

Ladies,You keep me from feeling sorry for myself and keep me laughing. I figured out that Dad's computer os working off windows 8 because the upgrae for 10 just appeared. It is a refurbished manufacture computer that i got real cheap since he just surfs the web and answers e- mail. the computer that I got is similar except no windows which it was suppose to have. No answers to e-mail and no phone number so it will be cheaper to buty Windows 10 and install it than anything else at this point.
Lola,
i bet yoiur dinner turned out well. Christmas here wqas a downer as Mom's youngest brother is in the hospital with a GI bleed that the doctors can not figure out what is bleeding. One of the medications he is on can cause this but no one is thinking about that, He got moved to ICU on Christmas day.
I pray for all of that next year is quieter.
Paula between you and the group your writing has enough to write many books.Glad the presents were found.
Hope you enjoy your day with Ray.

Funny you should say that! I just downloaded The Bad Luck Wedding Dress...what do you think about starting one of Emily's Historical Fiction titles? OR we could continue with one of the series by the other authors who's books were included in the three-pack with Emily...the ones we started before Christmas in Eternity Springs.
Thoughts?

That sounds great! I downloaded "The Bad Luck Wedding dress" last week when it popped up on my kindles screen when I turned it on. I cant wait for our discussions. I always learn something new with each book we read.
Hows the ankle? I hope its doing better.

Hi All,Yeah I got my new charger cord and my computer is charging ! I now know by trying to use my Kindle Fire I do not ever want a touch screen computer. It drove me crazy.
Thanks ,the feast did turn out fine ,I was surprised how well the yeast rolls baked in the roaster oven .
Melinda, I am so sorry about your Uncle ! What is his first name ? I will put him on the prayer list.
I re- listened to Christmas in Eternity Springs on Christmas, I think I listened to it too early because I didn't remember some parts, I really enjoyed it!
I am up for reading anything. Love Lola
Hello everyone,
Ray & I are going to VA to see our family from Monday through Saturday next week. I'll get a folder made up for The Bad Luck Wedding Dress and put that on our schedule starting January 1. I may be a little behind due to travel & granddaughter fun, but I'll be able to get started on it at night!
I hope everyone is healthy. My left foot is sprained, not fractured, so I'm going to be limping for about 4-8 weeks. I feel like a peg leg pirate. All I need is an eye patch and a parrot.
Blessings,
Paula

Happy New Year !!!!!I can not believe how many VIPs we lost this year! Paula's Mom & My Sister among them. Lets say a prayer for all of them! Peace be with them all! And Us too! Got to eat my Black eyed peas & greens today , I am afraid we will need all the good luck we can get ! Do any of you have any New Year rituals ? I heard last night that the saying for this year is " You can't be mean 2017" got my fingers crossed that people will be nicer to each other this year.
Love, Lola
Dear group,2016 finally over!!! I got an absolutely wonderful gift from my elf/secret santa. I got the whole Deborah Harkness Discovery of witches series. Thank you Jessica. It was on my personal tobuy wishlist on Amazon. I had one last bad thing happen in 2016. The mail lady drove through my grass and over my two staked and bricked lilac trees my mother sent me for this falls planting. The stakes were broke in half, the bricks were sumerged into the soft dirt and my trees were snapped off about 6 inches from the ground. I am heartbroken and mad. They were plainly marked but there was absolutely no reason to drive in the grass. I dont know how to tell mom they are ruined. She got them for me as remembrance trees in honor of my grandmas, both her mom and Dads mom. I may just order me replacement trees and not tell her.
On a brighter note, I dont know how to describe it but when I woke up I had such an optimistic feeling. My usual waking up feeling is I have a few seconds of the "glad to start another day" and then my anxiety would kick in and I would quickly check on the girls to be sure all is ok. Today, I cant tell you how or why but I knew they were ok. The anxiety never kicked in. To me thats amazing! I cant remember the last time I wasnt anxious or ready to dash around getting things to take in case we have to make an ER trip. I am so happy the anxiety never came that I feel like I could run a marathon! I hope everyone else started the year with thoughts of peaceful optimism.
Hugs to all,
Happy New Year!
Jina
Happy New Year, hope 2017 is better for everyone. We returned yesterday from an amazing two days celebrating Mark & Tina's wedding. Emotional but wonderful time with amazing people. You have all been so supportive during our trials of the last few month so for anyone who would like to have a look I have posted three photos in the photo file.
Looking forward to starting reading Emily's books again, I also downloaded Bad Luck Wedding Dress. Love to all.
Dear Jina,Don't give up on your lilacs, I bought a couple of them years ago and had them in our garage a pact rat ate them in half. I went ahead and planted them , they are now over 10 feet tall and about that big around. They are hard to kill as long as the roots are not damaged. I now have a whole fence line of lilacs, oh in the spring they smell up the whole neighborhood. I will have to add a photo of them when they are in their full glory this spring.
Glad you are having a good start to the New Year! Love Lola

I'm so happy you love them!! Lilacs are pretty tough and resilient. I'm allergic but we have several on our property and they come back pretty good. Did you try taping them together?
Lola wrote: "Dear Lesley ,Oh what a great Family !!! I love your new Daughter's smile!!!!! I wish them a sweet New Year! Love Lola"
Thank you Lola they are being a very strong couple at the moment
& we are always very proud of them.
Hello ladies,Thank you for the wishful/hopeful thoughts about my lilacs. I truly hope they bounce back from this. One was completely snapped off about 6 inches above the ground but the inside is still green. Any advice for saving it? Should I wrap it? Stake it deeper? I really don't want to lose it because that one it supposed to have yellowish blooms. The other one is the traditional lavender. I would so love to see pictures of your lilacs. Can you make them scratch and sniff??? Lol. I love lilac everything. On my moms side of the family it was my cousin Carmon and I against Shawn, Jerome, Brent, Brad, Cory, Daren, Tony, Bryan and Dana. So my only girl cousin and I hid in the middle of a lilac grove. I dont know if that why I love them but whenever I smell lilacs it takes me back to my grandmas farm. Isnt it fabulous how smell can trigger memories.
Have a lovely day!
Jina
Dear Jina ,I would just mound dirt or mulch around it and leave it alone, it may send shoots off the roots. Jen brought me back a yellow lilac off shoot from her friends bush in Seattle last Summer. Sadie kept running over it so I put a tomato cage around it and it really took off. I can't wait too see if it blooms this Spring. I love lilac & honeysuckle smells .I was never too fond of magnolia but love the smell of gardenias. My Aunt Boats had a huge gardenia tree in Houston when I was a kid, that is where I go back to when I smell anything gardenia.
Love, Lola
Dear group,I have news. I am trying not to get my hopes up or make a big deal of this but yesterday my hubby was craving a Big Mac. So I ran into town (about 5 miles) and picked up something for everyone including a couple large fries. I placed everyones stuff on paper plates and it was a "come and get it" meal. Heather got up and picked up about 3 french fries and went back to sit down. Sam was already on the other end of the couch and I was in the queen anne chair. Heather very carefully ate 2 of the fries. She very delicately tore of bits to chew and swallow. Sam and I were watching out the corner of our eyes. She does so much better when not interupted and when its an auto matic action. Her jaw was too tired to chew the third fry but I was so happy for her. She hasnt eaten by mouth since January 3rd 2013. So that makes it 4 years ago today. I got a letter in the mail Saturday. They want to put Heather on Medicare part A and B, its very confusing to me so I am going to her case worker tomorrow and see if she can help me.
I am a little scared. So I need positive thoughts. Heather has surgery on the 9th. They are removing her wisdom teeth, She has open spaces where she is missing jaw bone so they are going to inject a compound into those spaces to reconstruct her jaw and they are going to do botox injections to loosen the muscles of her jaw so they can put the jaw back where its supposed to be. When she had her heart attack she clamped her jaw down tight and the EMTs had to pry her mouth open, so they dislocated her jaw to intubate her. Now she is healthy enough to work on it. My biggest worry is that they are turning off her pacemaker/defibrillator for the procedure. She is paced %100 of the time. Please pray. My husband Michael is going with me this time. Normally its just me but he is worried too and this hospital is 2 and a half hours away from home. She's a tough cookie. I am just a worried mama. Thank you for always helping lift us up and making the hard days easier.
Love to all,
Jina

Hello, everyone -- I have a few moments to myself to catch up on the group. I've not had even a minute to start reading the Bad Luck Wedding Dress (BLWD...I need acronyms to type faster). I'm guessing it will be the weekend before I can really dig in because, naturally, time flies by when you're on 'vacation.' We always have so many things we want to do, but never enough time to fit them all in. I'll start a discussion thread for those who have a chance to share their initial thoughts about our latest read.
The NFL game was beyond exciting, even though our team was not at their best - it was definitely a peak experience going to the new stadium and being treated to the close-up experience. By the time we got to Virginia and went to bed Monday night, we'd been up nearly 36 hours straight, and at our age, we might as well have run the Ironman Marathon. Add a very energetic 3-year old to the mix and it's been wonderfully wild and unpredictable. In about an hour, we will be heading out again, to who knows where. But every minute counts with the people you love...so any exhaustion is absolutely worth it.
In quieter moments, I'm thinking about all of you and following what's happening in your lives, and hoping for good news where it's needed. We will be back home very late on Saturday night, so I imagine it will be at least Monday afternoon before I'm fully 'with it' again. In the meantime, I'll check in and follow up as I can.
Take care & God bless.

HelloSorry I haven't been on much but in my defense I have been in the hospital. This time its been me. It started with the worst sore throat ever with headache, fever and body aches. I woke up that way tuesday. The fever is easily controlled with tylenol but comes back every 6 or 8 hours. Then this morning I was wearing sweats when I got up and my hands and legs and feet were swollen and my skin was tight and felt like I had a sunburn. I went to chan g e and I had hives from my head to my toes. My whole back, stomache, down the inside of my thighs to my ankles were hives. I took benadryl and a half hour later I was having trouble focusing abd the hives were worse. Sam packed me in the car and took me to the ER. They did lots of tests and gave me IV fluids and 4 doses of steroids. The rapid strep was negative but the 4 attending doctors agreed it was strep and scarlet fever and I have to go back if it gets worse or any new symptoms. They were worried about my blood pressure being too low too. It was 72/40. I am glad to be back home and I will see how I am in the morning. We are supposed to get snow tomorrow and Saturday and ice on Sunday. I hope they can still do Heathers surgery on Monday. Keep your fingers crossed please.
Hugs from your itchy friend,
Jina
Oh my goodness, Jina -- that's frightening. Please don't tax yourself. Your decision to go to the ER was absolutely correct, and don't hesitate to go back if anything changes. Resting is the best thing you can do for your health and your family right now. Please keep us posted.
We are under the same winter storm watch you are...expecting possibly as much as 10" of snow in Virginia Beach - and our flight is supposed to leave tomorrow. We are debating whether or not to take the chance that the airport stays open, vs. changing our flight to Sunday.
Never a dull moment for this group, am I right? I'll be thinking of you and hoping for a quick recovery.

Holy Cow Little Sister ! Are you trying to give me more gray hairs ,although I don't think I have that many more to turn gray ! I pray for you and our girls! You need to slow down , and take some time for yourself! The girls need you healthy and so do we!Paula,
Hope your trip ends on a good note and you make your flights ,any problems with the Step Mother In Law ?

Hi Lola, Thanks for asking they seem to be doing ok at the moment. The wedding was an amazing couple of days, have posted a couple of photos in the photo file. Mark & Tina are spending the coming weekend at a Spa Hotel to celebrate this birthdaybefore he starts the next round of chemo next Thursday (12th). Judy was able to go to the wedding with us & is currntly awaiting the results of her latest scan, results also do on Thursday. Hope you are ok xx
Hi, everyone -- the winter storm warning was upgraded to a blizzard warning an hour ago, so we re-booked our flight to return Monday, arriving at an ungodly hour after MN on Tuesday, IF we don't get snowed in in Minneapolis-St. Paul....We're at the end of nowhere down here in the extreme southern end of Virginia Beach. I told you we can't go ANYWHERE without a story....I swear, I have a black cloud that hangs over my head on vacation. LOL.
Oh my goodness ladies!!! So much going on. I have been working a lot. We have inventory next Thursday. Maybe when that is over I will have more time to devote to reading and keeping up with the news here.Jina, I am praying for all of you. Scarlet fever is serious I hope you will get some rest so your body can fight off the infection and you can get better. Maybe Sarah and Sam can help out and take on some of the duties at home. You must be exhausted. Wish I could be there to help.
Paula, you can never say your adventures are boring. lol At least you are in a warm dry place with TV reception for the game tonigt. Go Hawks!!!
Lola, I hope the weather is calming down there. We had a light dusting of snow last night but it is warming up some what. Friday morning was 13 degrees and it was 24 this morning. Supposed to rain tomorrow so that is a good sign it is warming up. I hope you are warming up as well.
Lesley, I saw some of the wedding photos on Facebook. They are just lovely. Mark and Tina deserve a nice relaxing spa visit. It will be good for them. And, I am so happy Judy was able to attend the wedding. Sounds like everyone had a great time. Laughter is a good medicine.
Melinda, I pray your uncle is doing better and they find out the reason for his illness.
Well, eveyone, I think I am caught up on the news. I will try to be more faithful after inventory on Thursday. I swear they are trying to kill us, lol. Love and prayers for you all.
Linda

Dear Linda,
Thank you for telling us about your youngest sons success. It gives me so much hope that maybe someday that will be Heather. I wish all the luck in the world.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
Love you,
