In Jon Krakauer's best-selling novel, Into The Wild, he describes the adventures of a young man who ditched everything he had to live in the wild. We find out early in the book that Alex McCandless (the young man traveling in the wild) died in 1992. Prior to his adventure, he had given all his savings to charity and invented a new life for himself. Alex (formerly known as Chris) was looking for a new life for himself, but, in turn, he ended up losing his life altogether.
Although this novel is full of adventure and passion, I found it to be dry at times. I would not recommend it for anyone under the age of fourteen. It would be more appealing to mature minds because of the heavy logic and factual evidence about Alex McCandless' life. At the beginning of the book, I could not decide if I was a fan of Alex or not. Now that I have read the whole book through, I decided that Alex would be an interesting person to meet but I am not his biggest fan. Others in the book describe him as hard working, inspiring, and an inspiring kid . He seemed a bit too stubborn for me. He refuses the help of other several times throughout the book and ultimately dies because of his failure to accept others' advice. I would give this book a nine out of ten because although Jon Krakauer did a fantastic job writing this novel, it gets to be exceedingly dry.
Overall, Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer is a phenomenal read for women or men who enjoy history and adventure. I would not suggest this to anyone younger than fourteen because it would be harder for them to understand. I highly recommend reading this book to everyone hoping to learn more about Alex McCandless and his adventure across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
