Mate, this is a thread for writers talking about word counts, so that's a drive by. If you want to get ignored or thought of a spammer, ten out of ten for effort and execution.

May I politely suggest that if you want to be heard you don't shout book promotions in people's faces on threads where they are totally irrelevant to the conversation.

No, I will not be reading your book. Not ever, ever EVER now. Because you've spammed this thread.

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Managed 2,000 this morning but it needs to be more - fallen behind this week and that talk is next week so I'll need to focus on that. I don't do enough talks to take them entirely in my stride.

Sadly, that's the easy bit for me, talking, I mean, but I can't do it very often because I have McMini to look after and they're all in the evenings etc. Grrr.

Cheers

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments 846 yesterday. And I haven't started on the demon yet.

message 407: by David (new)

David Hadley Came up with an even better start to the new 1st draft this morning. So even more rearranging and about 650-ish new words.

One great thing - out of many - about Scrivener is how easy it makes all this rejigging, reordering and shifting things about.

message 408: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Kent | 23 comments Had a GREAT morning......wrote 1500 words and took a chapter in an entirely different direction.

Sometimes the writing can almost be as fun as reading...!!!!!

This is one of the reasons I'm always a bit unwilling to plot. I love the surprises. But I don't really have time to write like that anymore so I do need to plot it a bit now, and be organised. Interestingly, I still do get surprises but now it's with the humour in it.

message 410: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I still like to use both techniques. So I've one WIP that is plotted to within an inch of its life, and the current horror that I'm basically plotting one chapter at a time as I write it.

message 411: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I... err... deleted a few! Negative word count. On this thread, epic fail! Just got edit suggestions back. Need to do a little rejigging so from tomorrow, after chapter-order-faffing, I shall be back in the count zone, but not in lofty numbers.

message 412: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments O.M.G... 2,100 and I may yet be able to do more! So chuffed. 3 25 minute sprints! Happy Dance. :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Two of my colleagues have told me they've started writing a book.
They've both said they may be coming to me for advice.

After I stopped laughing, I told them I have quite a few friends who could offer better advice than I.

I may be posting questions on their behalf, so be prepared. ;)

We would probably all suggest: stop now while you still have your sanity

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Eep. I told them to set a daily target and write it, even if they delete it all the next day.

Their premises sound quite good, I must say.

One was the youngest female Sargent ever in the Royal Air Force. She's started on her memoirs. Fascinating stuff.

message 417: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I'd start by telling them to go and buy Stephen King's book 'On Writing'. Cheap on ebay, and best advice they will ever get

message 418: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Great idea, Will! I'm annoyed I didn't think of that. That's why you're the writer and I ain't.

I'll tell them on Monday morning.

message 419: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Managed to squeeze out another thousand words or so, but would really like another thousand to finish this chapter so I can watch the rugby tomorrow with a clearish conscience (I can knit and and groan, but not write and groan).

message 420: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments That's it, 4244 today. Now only a thousand to do tomorrow and I might be allowed to be in my seat by kick-off.

She's barfed that up all over the place, mostly where it has no relevance whatsoever. It's so bad that I sent her a PM saying, 'look dude, this is the way to make the world hate you. Stop already.'

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I second Will's suggestion to Pattie's friends about stopping. I only write because I have to.

Lexi! Top Banana nice going.
Kath, commiserations, but at least it's all progress.
Will, I think I'm going to end up plotting the new series quite closely or it's going to drive me nuts, and this one ... yes, I am kind of winging it. Mwahahahargh We are writing twins.

When I tried to give up writing I felt I should attend some sort of support group where I would stand up and say 'Hi, my name's Lexie, and I need to write' and everyone would applaud sympathetically. I couldn't find one, though!

Isn't Top Banana Kath's book? I'll claim it though if she doesn't want it - loved that book!

message 425: by M.T. (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Where's Tim? He usually appears as soon as banananananana is mentioned.

My t'other friend wants to write a book about international mindfulness in education. Rather a niche subject. It's the focus of his PHD.
I've warned him I won't be helping him with proofreading. ;)

Better than counting sheep.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I'm afraid "mindfulness" is one of those words (and concepts) that makes me grind my teeth. Probably because of the yummy mummy type yoga twits who bang on about it in my home town, whilst they're having coffee, doing lunch, or attending "music of the gong womb" workshops

Hardly seeing her off, I just told her not to be a knob. To be honest, she's probably a bot rather than a person, no real human could spam as many threads as she appears to have done, if you look at her profile.

message 436: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Done a thousand as hoped -- not sure it's much good, and some more plotting required now (suddenly realised nothing very much happens in this chapter and the next one is blank).

Yes so have I - and I liked her a lot. It's when you get a posse of them it's time to run!

message 440: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh purlease, Nosemanny. I know you swan about town in your yoga pants, smelling of green tea and clawing at the air with your perfect French manicure.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Yep, that's me down to a T

message 442: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments 'Down to a t'. Interesting origin, that. 'T' is probably short for 'tiddle'. Same as 'jot'. The mark above an i or j.

Hence 'I don't care a jot'.

Typesetting lingo in everyday language is quite interesting.

Jonathan Kent | 23 comments Only 500 words over the weekend, but I did manage to plot the next 6 chapters which has set me up great for the week...

message 449: by David (new)

David Hadley Still rearranging the beginning of the new one, so only 300-400 bright shiny new words today.

Also got two typing fingers caught between a washing machine and a hard place yesterday which makes typing a bit hurty after a while.

message 450: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Holy shizzle, I did 1,100 today, or possibly 1,200. I might have to jump over to the long work for a bit though, or at least to plot it. That'll slow me down again.

Cheers

MTM
