Quantum (quantumkatana) My 2017 New Year's resolution is to finish my horror story, The Yokai App, and self-publish it.

Woot!

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments My New Year's resolution is to be more decisive and eliminate useless and ineffective habits and practices. Sometimes we do things because we've always done them or because we don't want to hurt people's feelings. But it's amazing what will drain your energy and joy if you let it.

Tara, You are so right. It's not selfish to do things for ourselves sometimes, especially when we're stressed or overtired. Hugs

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments Thank you Sue, and I say that isone of the biggest reasons we are so stressed and overtired!
*hands Sue a steaming hot cocoa*
Here's to 2017 and taking care of needs!

Matthew Williams (houseofwilliams) Well, I want to finished my sci-fi story, mainly because a publisher is thinking of including it in their 2017 publications. It has to be finished if its going to be printed, right?

yes lol

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) *gratefully accepts cup of cocoa from Tara*
You are exactly right again! I raise my cup to you. Hugs

GR Oliver | 479 comments Tara, I'm 80. What should I look forward to. There aren't any miracles at my age. The chances of any landfall success is not in my cards. The lotto maybe, but what are the chances there: 1 in 10M? I haven't hit it yet. Sorry to have alarmed you.

I'm glad you clarified :) My father-in-law is 84 and he still enjoys life a great deal. I hope you do as well.

GR Oliver | 479 comments I have the typical old age problems, and they don't get better. I'm not one those people that longs for youth. That's a hopeless case. What I long for is a just and equal reality. Everything is so upside down these days.

I quite agree. Hopefully you have enough small joys to make you happy :)

Guilty as charged ha ha. I was finishing up some slides for a presentation - am heading to bed now. Be well, friend.

I seldom make them. I like organic change, usually. But next year I have some specific changes/objectives, so...

i'm glad that you put that comma b/w college and fun. ;) don't be like me, i drank too much in my last semester of college.

Denise wrote: "I have a few resolutions, but one is to finish my revisions for my first crime-mystery novel, finish a draft or two of the second crime mystery novel, and the rough draft of my humor novel."

humor? that is a real challenging genre! over the last couple of years, i've started on a couple of satires of arms manufacturing companies and war.

Ganbatte! Denise, Matthew, Pink, Mehreen on your art!

message 24: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Me, I resolve not to make resolutions. I made a "late-year resolution" to fix a date to walk into a local cinema and watch the new Star Wars. The walking is the important part - I am getting over a hip replacement surgery. Anyway, an earthquake has led to the local cinema complex being demolished, starting today. Resolutions are a waste of time, although I admit this one gave me something to aim for for a few days.

Previous years' resolutions were all made in terms of my publications. Perhaps not that many sales though.

Jen Pattison | 409 comments I don't normally bother with resolutions, but after this year's Yule feasting I must lose weight. I stopped smoking - 10 weeks ago today - and have put on weight (smoking speeds up your metabolism apparently) but I think that the weight gain is a small price to pay for improved lung function. Nevertheless, I'd like to lose those pounds early next year.

Oh, presentations! That reminds me when I was in business and stayed all night getting the ready. Have fun...

message 28: by GR (new)

GR Oliver | 479 comments I'm sorry, I don't have any. Most of the time resolutions are broken. They are wish lists that never come true. So I don't make them.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Yeah, quitting smoking and gaining weight seems to be an unbreakable bond. No smoking maybe makes one 'hungrier' -:)

those are good points. perhaps the point should be to make a plan rather than only a goal. i'll start another thread on that.

that's really great! congraluations!

i need to get back into jogging (at least 2.5 kilometers three times a week). heck, my aunt, who's in her 70s, ran a half-marathon a couple of years ago!

shoot, i even have a pull-up bar in my bedroom doorway that i haven't used in over 6 months!

ah, i sense another resolution.

Nik wrote: "Yeah, quitting smoking and gaining weight seems to be an unbreakable bond. No smoking maybe makes one 'hungrier' -:)"

what i heard is that it's an oral thing. so, to take place of the cigarette in one's mouth, one snacks more. it's easier to quit smoking if one does something on a daily basis that takes place of it. for example, when one reaches for a cigarette/cigar, then one grabs something else. that's called habit substitution. jogging or other cardio exercise also speeds up one's metabolism.

i've heard that habits take about 21 days to take hold. there's also nicorettes (the gum w/nicotine). one could also stop going to/hanging out in the places/people where one habitually smokes.

but then again, i'm not one to talk. i haven't had to stop smoking. i tried once and got terribly dizzy and nauseous.

message 36: by Jen Pattison (new)

Jen Pattison | 409 comments Thanks Alex - 12 weeks now, that's £150 saved and I don't even think about smoking any more. I always eat more in the winter anyway, but I am trying to snack on rice cakes and I am having a daily hike.

Go for it with getting back into jogging - I just love the good feeling that you get after exercise!

More details on my new year's resolution. I've decided that my target with this book is to sell enough copies so that I can become an Active Member of the SFWA:
"A candidate shall be eligible for Active Membership if:

A published work of fiction of a minimum of 40,000 words either sold to a small press or self-published for which the author can demonstrate net income of at least $3,000 over the course of a year since January 1, 2013. Income can be in the form of advance, royalties, or some combination thereof or;"
$3,000 + expenses/$2.99 ($3.99 list price) = 1,003 copies +

thx for the encouragement! i think that one of the keys to reaching your goals--besides being realistic, which i'm not too sure that it is, and being a worthwhile goal, which i'm pretty sure that it is b/c being an SFWA member would give me some authority-- is being able to measure your progress.

3k words. (-_-;)

message 42: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Like a few of you, I don't make resolutions, they are so easily broken. All I can do is hope and try. I've been trying to get active for years to improve my health--I'm still trying.

So my hope is to become more active; to finish my WIP (two books); and sell lots and lots of books:) Oh--and to be more positive. I tend to be negative at times.

Marie Silk | 1025 comments Marie wrote: "Get my books on audible! :)"

Lol I just realized that I posted this on my birthday last year! So here is my update...

Welp, I finally took the plunge today and got my book signed up with ACX. I'm trying to figure out why I've been so dang intimidated by the thought of it all this time. Maybe because it's completely new territory and I have no clue what I'm stepping into or what the response will be ?? I mean, I remember listening to audio books back when they were on cassette tapes...

I took the first step and my book is now officially open for auditions. I don't know what to expect as far as timeline or anything else so I'm pretty nervous. Wish me luck! :)

Ganbatte!

thanks for bumping this thread. it made me look at my goals again.

Although my goal was to sell 1003+ copies of a book, it was a way to reach my ultimate goal, which is to become an Active Member of the SFWA. Another way to to punish 3 short works for a total of 10,000 words a qualified venue. So, I'm going to try that too.

message 45: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Good luck, Marie! I'll skip the auditions, so nothing to worry about -:)

message 46: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) Well, with less than 2 months to to, I don't think I'll reach my goal of "becom[ing] an Active Member of the SFWA"

However, I ran a 5k.

I attended a writing workshop.

So, people, what's your status?

message 47: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Not exactly a new years resolution, but way back then I put on GR-WWW a statement that I would try to write a novel on Russians, oligarchs, hacking and fraud, and, well, it will be available on Nov. 24.

I missed out on my resolution from about a year ago - in January I was going to go to the local movie and see the Star Wars film. The point here was I would have to walk up and down a flight of stairs, and of course it is now one year since I had the hip replacement. I missed out on that because the day I came back from hospital we had that 7.8 earthquake, and a few week later they were demolishing the cinema complex. Sometimes, winning is not that easy.
