Libby McLellan | 137 comments I have landed on Chance #1 and must read a book (historical mystery, of course) recommended by another participant. Please help me out by making recommendations! Thanks!

Hi Libby,
As you don't appear to have any books on your read shelf, I'm not sure what type of historical mysteries you prefer. So I've given you a mix:

What Angels Fear - regency
A Duty To The Dead - WWI
Mistress of the Art of Death - Medieval.

They are all great books. Hope you find one to enjoy.

Vicki Cline | 65 comments And if you like ancient Rome, here's a couple.
Roman Blood
SPQR I: The King's Gambit
Or ancient Greece.
The Pericles Commission

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 465 comments I'll recommend one with a Tudor setting: Dissolution by C.J. Sansom.

message 6: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 267 comments Here are a few other choices:

Reconstruction-era USA: Still Life with Murder
Fin-de-Siècle Vienna: A Death in Vienna
1920s England: Murder at the Brightwell

You and I have read a lot of the same series!

How about this one? It's 1920s England: Murder at the Brightwell

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 697 comments I have landed on Chance for my second roll and need a recommendation, please. :-)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 465 comments I'm going to recommend The Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis.

message 14: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 697 comments Thanks, Susanna! Since I recently read and enjoyed the first four books in her Flavia Albia spinoff, I've been meaning to start the Falco books to see how it all started. And I know my library has this one. :-)

Great choices, both added to my tbr, thanks Lynn. As one of my local libraries has The Winter Queen available, I'm going for that.

Any time period preferences?

If you like Regency, I'm going to recommend What Angels Fear What Angels Fear (Sebastian St. Cyr #1) by C.S. Harris .

message 21: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) | 255 comments Not really. I think my TBR contains a pretty wide variety of time periods and mystery styles. I just finished A Perilous Undertaking this morning and thought it was great fun. Maybe I need something a little on the dark and gritty side next?

That is perfect. I am currently staring at a copy of that book, wondering if I am going to get it read before it needs to go back to the library.

I may also be fashioning myself a tinfoil hat.

@Gretchen - Here are a couple more just in case:

Mistress of the Art of Death
The Anatomist's Wife

I hope you like it, Gretchen. It's one of my favorite historical mystery series. Sebastian is one of my book boyfriends. ;-)

Tinfoil hats are making a comeback, I hear.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 465 comments If you are still in need of suggestions, how about An Impartial Witness or The Cater Street Hangman?

message 26: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) | 255 comments Well I finished my book. In related news, I just added 11 more books to my TBR.

I did. I like a good rogue. He's not quite as rugged as my current literary boyfriend, Uhtred, but he's got some potential.

message 29: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 697 comments And that reminds me, I have to get back to the Uhtred books. I've read through book 4.

I love Uhtred. Not that Uhtred they have on tv right now. He's too much of a pretty boy. Book Uhtred has literary heart.

He also looks on the short side compared with some of the other male actors on the show.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 697 comments Chris wrote: "I've landed on Chance 1 and need a recommended book, please. I'm fond of historical mysteries or historical fiction or mystery thriller."

I see you've read and liked the first Amory Ames book so continuing on with Death Wears a Mask Death Wears a Mask (Amory Ames Mystery, #2) by Ashley Weaver is a good bet.

If you'd rather try something new, I'd recommend Death Comes to the Village Death Comes to the Village (Kurland St. Mary Mystery, #1) by Catherine Lloyd for charm or The Ides of April The Ides of April (Flavia Albia Mystery, #1) by Lindsey Davis for fun.

message 36: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) The mystery element is not totally predominant in this book, although there is a murder and detecting, but if you like the Georgian/Regency era in England, you might enjoy A Useful Woman by Darcie Wilde.

Thanks! I'll try The Ides of April (Flavia Albia Mystery, #1) by Lindsey Davis - it's available online from the library.
