Nicole D. | 1573 comments Like Jen, my list is fairly influenced by Man Booker. Read a bunch of books I wouldn't have otherwise (including the two DeLillo because there was talk Zero K would get the nom)

Favorite of the year listed first, the rest are fandom. My review of White Noise will be on Readers Room on Monday.

White Noise - Don DeLillo
Hot Milk - Deborah Levy
Just Kids - Patti Smith
Fates and Furies - Lauren Groff
Work Like Any Other - Virginia Reeves
My Name is Lucy Barton - Elizabeth Strout
The Nightingale - Kristin Hannah
Zero K - Don DeLillo
1984 - George Orwell
The Sellout - Paul Beatty

Saving two spots ... The Nix could hit the list, it's starting strong

If anybody knows of any other stand out DeLillo books please let me know. I might be in love with him

Karin | 9252 comments Hooray, I was able to add a ninth to my first post (I'm guessing you'll collate when the year is done) and I sure hope I get one more 5 star read in this year (even if it's rounded up from 4.5).

message 104: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments The nix is really good!

Booknblues - I think we often read the same kinds of books. I've noticed some overlap in books!

I've noticed that as well. I read a bit more genre books than you, I think.

message 106: by Susie (new)

Susie The Nix is my book club's choice for our Christmas holiday read. I'm so excited to get started on it. So many things are getting in the way of my reading at the moment.

message 107: by Nileema (new)

Nileema | 150 comments Wild - Cheryl Strayed
Daring Greatly - Brene Brown
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
Us - David Nicholls
Where'd You Go Bernadette - Maria Semple
What Alice Forgot - Liane Moriarty
Me Before You - Jojo Moyes
Lean In for Graduates - Sheryl Sandberg

Thanks for noting it Kristel, makes things easier for me.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I hit a real slump in Sept/Oct and have not gotten back to normal throughput, but still managed to have 16 books rated 4.5 - 5 stars. In random order, these are the ones that stuck with me the most.

The Fifth Season - N. K. Jemisin
The Crown - Nancy Bilyeau
Pope Joan - Donna Woolfolk Cross
Dark Matter - Blake Crouch
The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
A Gathering of Shadows - V. E. Schwab
Under A Painted Sky - Stacey Lee
The Seven Sisters - Lucinda Riley
A Thousand Pieces of You - Claudia Gray
Rules for a Knight - Ethan Hawke

message 111: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I updated my top ten list. It's message 6. I removed Blackmoore (it was a reread) and I added Dark Matter.

Thanks Jenni

message 113: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments This was really hard this year! I think it was largely because I read more contemporary fiction this year than I normally do and it all just kind of blends together. I did have some stellar reads though!

In no particular order:

Purity - Jonathan Franzen
Queen of the Night - Alexander Chee
Georgia: A Novel of Georgia O' Keeffe - Dawn Tripp
Seabiscuit: An American Legend - Laura Hillenbrand
A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles
Fates and Furies - Lauren Groff
Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg - Irin Carmon
The Son - Philipp Meyer
Lilac Girls - Martha Hall Kelly
The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness - Sy Montgomery

message 114: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I just edited message #48. I added Girl at War and removed The Water Knife. Choosing a book to remove was really tough.

Girl at War is very powerful.

message 115: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Can I jump in with my top ten? I was wondering, as I probably am the newest addition to the group... Just disregard my message in case you only need the older members' lists.

In no particular order:

The Tartar Steppe - Dino Buzzati
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - William Kamkwamba
The Body Keeps the Score - Bessel van der Kolk
Antigone - Jean Anouilh
All the Bright Places - Jennifer Niven
I Am Malala - Malala Yousafzai
Speak - Laurie Halse Anderson
Random Acts of Heroic Love - Danny Scheinmann
Which Witch? - Eva Ibbotson
The Shining - Stephen King

Honorable mention for The Odyssey - Homer, which didn't make it to the list just because I had no place anymore. Sadly, one of the best books I read this year is a novel by an Italian author which hasn't been translated into English, so I couldn't include it in the count.

I read the Boy Who Harnessed the Wind this year. I've been to a conference by Bessel van dear Kolk.

message 117: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Ooooh, Kristel, really?! It must have been wonderful to hear van der Kolk talk! I really loved his book.

message 118: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) | 699 comments He is an excellent presenter. It was a few years ago but I think he is still speaking on the same. He talked about trauma being stored in the memory as sensory and not words and that best therapy is some kind of movement therapy. It was interested.

You might like to join Shelfari 1001 group, we read a lot f the books of your interest such as After the Quake and The Tartar Steppe.

message 119: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Thanks, Kristel. I'll think about joining the group you mention :)

It's I milanesi ammazzano al sabato - Giorgio Scerbanenco. It's a real shame that there's no English translation of this book, it's such a great mystery!

This sounds real interesting. I'd never heard of him, I'll need to see if I can find some of his books at the library.

message 123: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Do, Sushicat! I've only read two of his books (the other one being Il Centodelitti, a collection of short stories), but I want to read more, as I find him really great.

Awww, I hope they translate it at some point . . .I think it would be so neat to be able to read in different languages. Sadly, I'm terrible at learning foreign languages.

message 133: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 689 comments My 2016 Top Ten! I was waiting to finish a particular book before going ahead and contributing; as I thought, it made it on to the list!

In order:

Peter Pan - Barrie
Tarzan - Burroughs
Quiet - Cain
All the Light We Cannot See - Doerr
The Boys in the Boat - Brown
Unbroken - Hillenbrand
I Am the Messenger - Zusak
The Husband's Secret - Moriarty
Little Women - Alcott
The Gargoyle - Davidson

I had a lot of great four star reads this year, making it hard to fill out the last couple of spots in my Ten. Great reading year!

Amy | 12953 comments Signature of All Things Coming our way - lol. Someone had made a comment on a recent review, who'd a thunk that I would love a book so much that has to do with the intricacies of moss.

message 149: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9301 comments Susie wrote: "I'm so happy that you are loving it Anita! I miss Alma!"

I am loving it! I just hope I can finish it before my library loan expires and before the year comes to an end. I'm unaccustomed to reading under pressure . . .and this is a book I want to savor. Trying to finish American Heiress first because I only have four days left on that one. Sigh. This is why I buy books.

message 150: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments I didn't love American Heiress. It didn't move for me. I know you enjoyed her other book. I find it impossible even to not finish bad books, but if you are inspired not to finish this one, I would go back to Signature. I do my reading through our library so also feel the pressure of both monthly deadlines and library ones. I have ten days to read three books to have them count for December. One thing I started years ago, is a relationship with the library in my parents town. So I can order books and movies for the kids, and take care of my own needs. Good luck to you and sending love to you both and to all, Love, Amy
