This challenge couldn't align more perfectly with my goal to read more broadly! I'm aiming for 6 books for this challenge (1 every other month) but will be interested to see where this leads.I look forward to learning about what others read. For now, my proposed books (subject to change) are:
Russian: The Master and Margarita

Finnish: The Summer Book
Hungarian: The Door
Japanese: Memoirs of a Polar Bear
I've never participated in a challenge before, but I love this topic and I would like to give it a try! I hope to read more than 5, but I am surprised by how hard it is to acquire translated books second hand in my home town. Maybe if I am able I will expand this list later on :)1. 1Q84 (Japanese)

3. Anna Karenina (Russian)

I like this one. I will do the books translated to English or Spanish. For this please add me for 10. I am plan to read more in Spanish and that covers South America and Spain.... Many countries, one language.
Interesting challenge. Since most literature is readily available translated into English, we tend to overlook or forget the nationality of the authors, and yet I find that since leaving college I've sadly neglected a lot of good international writers. Some of these I've been meaning to read and never got around to, so this provides a little incentive. :D I'll start with 5 and see where I get this year. 0/5 complete
1. French: The Little Prince
2. Swedish: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
3. Italian: The Name of the Rose
4. Spanish: One Hundred Years of Solitude
5. Japanese: 1Q84
Ok, either I typed this out already and forgot to post it, or I did it wrong..LOL here are my books for this challenge and yes, I ended up with more than 6!!1. The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
2. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Franke
3. This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen by Tadeusz Borowski
4. Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier
5. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
7. The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler
1/20Seeing Red by Lina Meruane.
This is a brutally honest examination of illness and personal loss. Took my breath away!
I have a question. I'm planning to read A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. He was a Norwegian playwright but he wrote in Danish as that was the written language of the time in Norway and Denmark. Can anyone clarify which language I should use for this challenge?
Amanda wrote: "I have a question. I'm planning to read A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. He was a Norwegian playwright but he wrote in Danish as that was the written language of the time in Norway and Denmark. Can ..."I would put it down for Danish since that was the language it was translated from.
I'm joining this challenge, and aim for 10 books. Not sure what I'll read, but one of them will be Maidenhair by Mikhail Shishkin. I thought I'd share a couple resources for those interested in literature in translation to English:
-a great resource is Three Percent blog, out of the University of Rochester: http://www.rochester.edu/college/tran...
-Deep Vellum (http://deepvellum.org/) publishes literature in English translation from various languages. I've found many excellent books through my public library by narrowing my search to holdings from this publisher.
Good luck to all on the challenge! Looking forward to your suggestions and reviews!

Thanks for catching that Tytti! One should never try to write one thing while thinking about something else at the same time. I was thinking that I was going to read it in german and accidentally wrote German instead of Dutch. German is my second language and I have a copy of Anne Frank's diary in German that I have never had a chance to read. I'll go back and correct the original comment later :)
