Great, thats also how I felt about it.

I've read the book recently and I was impressed by it. It seems very strange that it wasn't nominated for either Hugo or Nebula, but it is not the first time I wonder about it.
While the 'science' part of the book has its holes (they are ok with contamination the new world with Earth bacteria, they don't set camp perimeter, they don't follow protocols, etc) but the story had other aims and it clearly achieved them.
I see it as a stand-alone book and don't plan at the moment to read the sequel

It does stand alone fine. But the follow-up is also quite good. I liked it even more. Perhaps because I knew to expect a slow story.
