because the group was naturally falling apart and drifting away from each other, the moment had passed.
I also agree, that because Kesey had to quit the scene, he lost his followers. He was charismatic person but he lost his connections with the more steady people when he got into drugs and craziness people began to seriously doubt him and others did not want to give up the drug scene.
