Lindsay (lrvjazzy) | 5 comments Good morning everyone!

Happy December and happy everything Gilmore Girls! What an exciting time to be a fan. I am pleased to be leading the discussion for Lauren Graham's latest, 'Talking as Fast as I can.' I have just finished her first novel, 'Someday, Someday, Maybe', which was an absolute joy to read.

I have two bits of exciting news. One, the new book is released and two, the audiobook is released and narrated by Miss Graham herself! If I had any doubt I was reading the first two chapters of her new book how she intended (in true fast-talking Lorelai style) it was pleasantly confirmed in her witty self-banter that streamed over the mp3 audio file.

A bit about me. This is my first book discussion I'm participating in. Ever. Well, officially ever. I've had multiple book-loving babbling sessions with my mother and sister and I'm sure I've had to give a decently constructed thought or two in college, but I've never spoken up on here. So, if there is a thought, comment, exclamation...whatever voice you want heard or discussed feel free to shout it out! I'll give some direction on different topics I find interesting but the most important part is that we talk with each other.

So far I see that I have a few library book readers waiting for their copy. I myself love, love, LOVE getting library books but for this challenge I took on buying used at a local bookstore, except in this brand-new book instance where I pre-ordered online. It gets expensive. So I am going to format my topics to where everyone can chime in and be a part (because who doesn't have something to say about Lauren Graham!) and then when you do get ahold of your copy you can be delightfully entertained and indulge in her words for yourself.

So first up, kind of generic excitement here. Lauren Graham lived in Alexandria, VA! I work in Alexandria so you can see where my excitement comes from here. I think an interesting topic to start is how where someone lives or grows up effects their voice, viewpoint, style, etc...I know there's more to it than just your environmental surrounding but her book is about where she came from to where she is :)

Kayla Tocco (kaylatocco) | 13 comments I think where you grew up has a huge impact on who you are as a person whether you hated where you're from so you made it a point to get out and never look back or if you loved where you grew up and never wanted to leave etc. I grew up in Southern California. I currently live in Las Vegas and I dream of living somewhere I can experience Seasons. California has an extremely laid back mentality that growing up I embraced to a certain extent, when I transplanted to Las Vegas I found comfort in my books even more than ever before because Vegas is a very "lonely" city. With a metro area population of roughly 3 mil you wouldn't think so, but most are also transplants, most don't last more than a year or two hear and because of that no one makes connections out here. Also i consider myself to be fiscally conservative but socially liberal and I think this is in large part due to where I grew up, California being an extremely liberal state, I adopted a lot of views based on my surroundings but also because they truly make sense to me, but my profession out there was one around a successful business that is expanding every day and that's where I attribute much of my financially conservative opinions, I often wonder if I'd grown up elsewhere if my views would differ or if they would be what they are now. Something I'll never know. Also, where I grew up in California- although I dreamed of seasons, I loved right in the middle of everything so the mountains, beach or desert were no more than an hour from me so when the mood struck I could venture where I wanted which I think opened my personality to a point where I don't truly know where I want to be, I want to live everywhere but I want roots because I was given roots growing up and I love having them. I think if I'd grown up In Las Vegas maybe I'd either embrace the desert (which though it's beautiful in its own right, I'm not a huge fan of) or go somewhere completely opposite such as Portland lol, where as now because I've had a little taste of everything, I find it hard to get that sense of belonging anywhere. It gives me a wanderlust feeling which I think is part of the reason I love reading so much- it allows me the ability to travel anywhere I want from wherever I am. I'm sorry I tend to ramble and type as my mind goes so this a bit jumbled but I do agree that we're you're from has a huge impact of who you are.

That's a great perspective! I, myself, grew up in a small town in Southeast Kansas and experienced all four season, two coming in extremes and wanted nothing more but to keep my seasons and be around more people (and boy did I get that being in the DC area now!). I have also found myself longing for my familiar childhood surroundings of the quiet country so I've accomplished that by moving further out and getting my "people" fix by working in the city and now commuting. I too want "roots". I've always wanted to be a person who could say this is my best friend, I've known them since forever (but if that was true I wouldn't be me and also why I love to read books, you get to experience lives that aren't yours!) I think that so many people, including Lauren Graham, have shown feeling to what you describe and it's so much fun to hear where people came from and how it's helped shape the person they are going with or opposite of which they came. She explains that where she was born, from where she lived, and to what she wanted to do...where should she be? Or have been? It all gave her choices. So, ramble away Kayla! I think the best adventures come from finding what is right for us and getting to find others we connect with (being the same or different). So far I'm loving her book because of her very "tried this, tried that, do what's best for you" outlook. She reads as a person I'd like to meet :)

Lindsay (lrvjazzy) | 5 comments I'm about halfway through the book, would totally be done but I keep going back and forth between listening to the audiobook on my commute and rereading the sections to scope out the pictures and replay her words in my head. Something that I personally relate to...the diet books. Ohhhh, I have played my part and when I thought I was fat at 130lb...as long as I stayed under 130 in my early 20's I'd be okay...and now at 33 I sit at 180lbs and I am stronger than ever. I absolutely related to the chapter, "You can't be a Vegan Just for Ellen." Lauren delightfully covers every major quick fix fad diet that has been out there in her own fast-talking way. Favorite quote? "I think it should be against the law to feel down on yourself regarding any issues that Oprah is still working on, and OPRAH IS STILL WORKING ON THIS ISSUE."

Which brings me to a discussion topic. How does needing to "look" the part effect what we do or how we see certain rolls? Would we look at Lorelai Gilmore differently if she was (appropriate to diet in the show) overweight? While you can't cast the same person for every role, how much does Hollywoods need to cast a certain look effect how we see ourselves? And on that topic I had to read the differences between affect and effect...no matter how many times I use them I also question if I'm doing it right :)

Crystal (readinglowry9613) | 10 comments Just bought this book tonight! I cannot wait to dive into it tomorrow! I am from a large suburban city of Denver, called Castle Rock! Born and raised here and now living with my husband and three dogs here. I think where a person is from plays a huge role in who they are! Now one side of my family is from rural Kansas and the other lives in San Francisco.... out of all my siblings I am the one that gravitates towards the city life more! I love the one of a kind stores, finding the in places to hang out and of course people watching! I cannot wait to read this book!

Crystal (readinglowry9613) | 10 comments Favorite quote so far....
Don't let your plan have the last laugh, but laugh last when your plan laughs, and when your plan has the last laugh, laugh back laughing! - Lauren Graham!

I just finished the book a few nights ago. I hadn't yet watched the revival episodes. I was kind of feeling like Lauren does in the book. When she talks about it being over and she can't believe it and doesn't want it to be over. She's so much like Lorelei in some ways and that's a little weird, but... it is what it is I'm sure. I've never seen 'Parenthood' but I might see if I can watch the first few episodes and see what I think of it.
Anyways, I enjoyed the book. I'm trying to get all the books finished up that this group read before I joined. Some of them I had already read, but I've got 6 left on that list, while still keeping up with the monthly reading. (I know there is the quarterly re-read, but last time it was something I had already read so I did my own.)

Colleen (miniguinea73) Parenthood is soooo good.

Frau Spätzle (soenne) Talking as fast as I can has been picked as our 2019-Q1 re-read. Amaka is our discussion leader for the re-read (thank you!) - watch out for her posts in this thread.

In the meantime, feel free to post whether it's your first or second (or third...) time reading the book. I've ordered it a few weeks ago, but apparently Amazon Germany seems to be having problems delivering it. Keep your fingers crossed, I'll get my copy soon. Can't wait! :)

Megg | 7 comments "Talking as Fast as I Can" is on Scribd as the audiobook. I really enjoyed Lauren telling her own story. I think it was much more entertaining than just reading it. The only drawback is you can't see the photos she references. But I highly recommend! :)

Amaka Nzeadibe Hi! Hope all is well. So I'll be leading the re-read and, to be honest, am super excited! I honestly don't know much about Lauren Graham, and couldn't name her in anything outside of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I find her to be a good actor and wondered about her career and personal life. This will be a fund read, and can't wait to start (I'm waiting on my library).

Lauren Graham does a lot of voice acting now.
I had forgotten that I read this before when I was trying to catch up on the reading this group has done. Which is great because Im still behind. I really liked this book and I usually dont like autobiographies. I did highlight a few parts. I will go back and review so I can discuss it with everyone.

Frau Spätzle (soenne) Finished the book today on my commute. I really liked it - it's an easy read and quite entertaining. It took me a bit to get into it, but then I thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

Meg✨ (enchantedtoreadwithyou) | 7 comments Loved this book! I love Lauren Graham and it felt very true to who she is. I was also laughing constantly!

Caitlin | 5 comments I LOVED this book. I can’t believe how much I actually laughed while reading it!
