Other than the sociopath you were talking about what other areas did you gather inspiration for this series? Any authors or movies etc?

I've got to keep my books straight. For the last few months I've been bouncing between editing The Mirror's Truth and Swarm and Steel and they've kinda blended together in what remains of my brain.
The original inspiration for Beyond Redemption came from a song I recorded for a local Toronto Band called Dirty Penny. It was about the meeting between Atahualpa and Francisco Pizzaro, the Spanish Conquistador. Yeah, odd topic for a rock band, but they were that kind of band. I can't remember exactly how or why, but it started the whole Manifest Delusions concept. The first MD story I wrote (Fire and Flesh: A Manifest Delusions Short Story) was a retelling of that meeting. Back then I Geisteskranken were called Maniacasts, Hassebrands were Pyrocasts, Gefahrgeist were Sociocasts and so on. Kinda wonder if I should have stuck with that, but it felt juvenile, predictable. I wanted more mystery. I wanted the reader to wonder what the hells was going on and then learn about the world as they read.
The other influence was kind of an anti-influence. I remember seeing a lot of fantasy books with all these good looking people with great hair on the cover and wondering why the ugly people didn't get a book. I had the title before I wrote the first word.
Now that I think about it, it's possible Black Sun Rising may have also been an influence. I remember thinking how awesome the concept of a responsive reality was and wanting to push it further, in a different direction.
S&S, on the other hand, was very much influenced by the movie, Ravenous.

I'd never heard of grimdark until my agent said "the grimdark crowd will love this" in reference to BR. I really didn't give genre much thought when writing. If pressed, I would have called it dark fantasy. I've come to realize it doesn't much matter what I call my books if everyone else thinks they're something else. And grimdark is pretty damned fitting.
I`m glad you liked the writing! This is my second novel. The first was me trying to be Neil Stephenson and trying to write Snow Crash and failing miserably. This was the first time I wrote with no thought of emulation. Every time a book comes out (TMT will be my third) I suffer this crisis of stress as I worry everyone will figure out I`m a hack and have no idea what I`m doing. So....shh. Don`t tell anyone.
And totally OT, I just saw today that Talos have set up preorders for a hardcover release of Swarm and Steel. Hardcover! Kinda freaking out. Always wanted to see something of mine in a hard cover.
