SOLVED. Historical M-M romance - main character becomes addicted to opium? [s]

It is a m-m historical romance that I think was only a novella released before a full-length book series that featured a f-m relationship. In this book one of the male main characters loves his friend who was a slave? I think, or maybe they both were slaves, and one of the big plot points I remember is he later becomes addicted to opium.

It is not The Infernal Devices series, this was an adult book, not YA.
