Jena | 12 comments I just started beta reading and I use my iPad. The first book I did I made annotations and edits while I was reading and also put some notes down on paper. Well when I went to go send it, none of my annotations sent. What program would you recommend for the iPad that I can make comments on and send those comments back to the author. Or how would you suggest I make edits any other way. I am not super computer savvy and I have reached the extent of trying to figure it out on my own! I appreciate any help!!

G.G. (ggatcheson) I use Ibooks (for epub) and it works like a charm. People who beta read for me used it too. I send myself notes of changes I want to make while proof reading too.
Ibook will send what you highlight, with a little extra (sometimes) and all the notes you wrote for the highlights.
It even tells you in which chapter it can be found. When sending the notes by emails, don't forget to check all the notes else nothing will send.

Tony Denn (tonydenn) You can annotate on PDFs these days. Really simple and comes standard.

Jena | 12 comments G.G.: What if they are sent to me in a word document, can I request it in ePub? And if I edit it in iBooks will it transfer to someone who doesn't have iBooks?

Jena | 12 comments Tony: What program can I open the PDF in on the iPad? I just got my iPad after my computer died on me so I'm slowly adjusting.

G.G. (ggatcheson) @Jena The word document won't open in Ibooks. You can always request an ePub, but not all authors will have one ready. They could make a quick one with Calibre. (Note that the formatting might not be pristine, but they are probably asking you to beta read for the story and not for the format anyway.)

As for your second question, yes they will get it just the same because you send your notes and highlights in the form of an email. Quite handy since you can access your emails on practically any device nowadays.

Jena | 12 comments Thank G.G. I will have to give that a try next time!

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) You can open a PDF in iBooks as well.

Jena | 12 comments Ok I tried to make a highlight/comment in iBooks and then send it to myself just to check if it would show up and in the email it just recommended that I read that book. .... I'm obviously going to need step-by-step. I have an author I am trying to beta read for but I just can't hand write all the comments like I usually do and I'm about to quit, which I don't want to because I like the book and I don't want to do that to the author. So if anyone could give me step by step directions on how to make comments in a manuscript and then send those comments back to the author, I would greatly appreciate it.

G.G. (ggatcheson) ok once you're done or once you want to send what you have noted, from the book you go to the contents page, 3 choices are offered to you there. Contents, bookmars, or notes.
Click NOTES. Then from the top right corner clicke the square with the arrow. That will lead you to another choice: Share book or Edit notes.
Click Edit notes.
Now next to each note you have a small circle showing. Check them all (they should turn blue). Once you have them all checked, click the tab SHARE on top of the page (you have choice from select none, share or delete). DON'T CLICK DELETE!
Click SHARE. Two choices will appear, MAIL or PRINT.
Click MAIL.
A regular looking email thing will appear.
Enter the email address you want to sent it to.
To : (email address)

Once that is done the grey out SEND in the corner will change color and you will be able to click it.
Click it and voila!

To make comments, you need to highlight the words/sentences that brought up the need to make a note. Once highlighted, click again on it and a choice will appear. (circle, garbage can, colored square, square with arrow and > )
CLick on the colored square (looks like a speech square, the middle icon, or third from left).
The square will appear bigger and a keyboard will appear under. Type your message then click anywhere on the page to get out of the menu. One note done. Do that with everyone of them before you proceed with the first part of my message.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Jena | 12 comments This isn't exactly what I wanted, but it is a solution and I am so very very very grateful for this information. Thank you. I have literally spent hours trying to find an app that works. So frustrating. Thank you!!!!'

Tony Denn (tonydenn) If you install Adobe's free PDF app that will do the heavy lifting. Adobe Air is useful on pc but not sure about Apple

Lisa Tobleman (monsterreader) | 15 comments Goodreader (the PDF editor not this website) is a phenomenal editing app, it is expensive for an iPad app, but my husband' law firm uses it as does several of my writing blogging groups. You can track changes, edit, and if you have a PC with Word on it, it is a simple thing to convert a Word doc to PDF and load it onto your iPad. I also have Pages on my iPad, and a blue fire reader which can also read and comment on PDF files. It is possible to comment using ePub files, but they come out in the order you wrote them, so if you read the book several times and make comments back and forth, the emailed list of comments can be difficult to read.
