I found an interesting article called 80 books No Woman Should Read , what do you think? Any additions.

http://lithub.com/80-books-no-woman-s...

I'll also include this list
http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/...

Karin Here's a link to the list on GR (I googled for any list that wouldn't make me go slide by doggone slide).

I think I read 17 of them.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments What comes to mind for me are some of the books I read in the 60's. They echoed the mantra we were taught. Good girls didn't. Heroes were always sweeping women up and carrying them to the bedroom as the women pounded their chest (or variations on the theme.) They really did promote the idea that no doesn't really mean no.

I read and didn't particularly care for 9 of them, another 5 were meh, and a dozen were books I really liked.

I have a strong antipathy for Hunter S. Thompson.

message 7: by Karin (new)

Karin I've only read 8 of these, so can't make any big comments on them.

I disliked Rabbit Run, for the very reason that it was so malecentric and Rabbit was a bit of a dick, so never bothered to read more of the series.

message 9: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) I've read 8 and started and abandoned 5 more. I have no intention of reading any of the others. Good to know about Rabbit Run as it's one of those series I always felt I should try.

Den, we can start a Hunter S. Thompson anti-fan club.

I read all the 'rabbit' books decades ago, and liked them. However, I too would like to join the anti-HST fan club, please.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments there's several books I had already decided against but have to say there were 5 books I would consider favorites: The Grapes of Wrath, The Brothers Karamazov, The Killer Angels, Lonesome Dove, and The Road.

I tried twice to read The Adventures of Augie March but just couldn't get into it. That was back in the day when I finished books 99.9% of the time. The rabbit books just never caught my interest - never picked them up.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments This thread inspired me to check my male to female authors read ratio for the year. Usually I run about 50-50, last year skewed a little more male but am definitely going to finish with more female authors this year - 31 to 23 at this point.

message 13: by Karin (new)

Karin Lonesome Dove is one of the very few books on this list I plan to read at some point.

I've read 37 by female authors and 33 by male. I usually have a few more male authors than female, I think.

There are quite a few on this list that I like and I am fond of some kinds of fiction usually written by men as war and espionage. The kind I really dislike is the celebration of a male being a complete dick and I think the Rabbit tales fall in that category, at least for me it did.

message 15: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) I usually have more female authors than male but this year it might be different. I'll count it up at the end of the year and report back. Thanks for keeping the side up, Den and BnB.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 104 comments To be honest, I have no idea which gender I read more. Is there function for goodreads to tally and separate my male vs. female authors; or do I have to go book by book and do it myself?

I did the same thing: So, of my 73 books I've read so far this year

43 - Women
30 - Men

message 19: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) 65% women for me.

message 20: by Karin (new)

Karin I usually read about half and half, I think, but have never done a full survey.

So far for books I've actually read this year (stupid GR has put reading dates for old books I added as I came across them here):

Women - 54, which is a bit over 51 percent
Men - 51

I am currently reading one by a woman and one by a man.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 104 comments I noticed a lot of errors when I was checking my read books (there were too many in the read section that I have not read yet). Thus began the edits. I was no longer focused on my goal of splitting authors by gender, so I ended up going to my profile (which I should have done in the first place) to see what was what for the year. I still have a lot of editing to do in order to make my shelves accurate, which will take me away from the general joy of reading. I might just keep tweaking along the way.

I managed to remove a few dates to nothing, but naturally they appeared in today's feed. I hadn't thought of checking my profile as I was going through the My Books page with the books in date read order (from most recent to oldest or undated).

If you set a yearly reading goal, they sort out nicely all the books you dated as read in 2016. When I tag a book on my TBR, I often find the reading status changed but, since I don't put a read date, they don't appear on my yearly goal list.

Lonesome Dove was absolutely marvelous.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 104 comments yes they do Denizen. I should have just gone there in the first place. I always set a goal.

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments Came across my 2016 5 star list and am not surprised they are all by females. The Children's Book
The Luminaries
Leap
A Guide to Berlin
Where the Trees Were
The World Without Us
The Natural Way of Things

rough and ready from 'read 2016'

: Male authors = 45
Female authors = 63

My shelves are too messy to get the M/F ratio.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, Lesley.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 104 comments I have the paperback, but I already saw the movie, I wish I had not done so. Now, I need to let some years go by so I can forget all the details and then I'll be able to read the book. I can read a book, then watch the movie, but for some reason, I cannot do that in reverse.
