Yayati: A Classic Tale of LustThe story of Yayati is perhaps one of the most intriguing and fascinating episodes of Mahabharata. Yayati was a great scholar and one of the noblest rulers of olden times. He followed the shastras and was devoted to the welfare of his subjects. Even the King of Gods, Indra, held him in high esteem. Married to seductively beautiful Devyani, in love with her maid Sharmishtha, and father of five sons from two women, yet Yayati unabashedly declares, 'My lust for pleasure is unsatisfied...'. His quest for the carnal continued, sparing not even his youngest son, and exchanging his old age for his son's youth...The book has won Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi Awards.
Okay.. Have read his introduction?
yes, it was very good.....that made me more eager to read the book.I guess the original Marathi, would be even better!
Yes.. it's so much better. Do you understand Sanskrit?
Khandekar is my most favourite author... his books are very beautiful and full of wisdom. They change way of your thinking. But all of his books are translated I guess.
Shlokas from Mahabharata plays important role. Actually whole book is based on one shloka from Geeta.
Aarti wrote: "Shlokas from Mahabharata plays important role. Actually whole book is based on one shloka from Geeta."ooh, which one is that?
Wait.. I will find it in original.
Rebecca wrote: "Have a few books in the list in my TBR too. Will join for Game of thrones and some others."yeah sure, we will be happy to have you :)
I can't find that shloka. I forgot Adhyay no. I will definitely find it tomorrow.
I think it's give at the end of the book- it's regarding Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha being four Purusharthas.
Aarti wrote: "I can't find that shloka. I forgot Adhyay no. I will definitely find it tomorrow."okay :)
I started with the Intro today morning, only to find that I need a little bit of homework before I can dive into this.Need to get an overview on Shakuntala, just a brief on who was Yayati, Devayani and Sharmishta, Kacha....

Thanks and sure keeping dropping in :D :D
From what I got from the intro, the writer has taken liberty with the story, It is more of a mythological fiction......
I remember loving Yayati. I have been bought up on amar chitra kadha stories and had an idea of the story. This was a story telling with a realistic adaptation of the mythological characters.
@Gorab- You have read Yugant right?

Most welcome :)
Most welcome :)
After a little wiki on these characters, started it. Enjoying it as an independent story forgetting any connection with Mahabharata....have read till 15%
Sorry Pran! Got so engrossed in the story that i couldn't stop, until the chapter changed. So I'm at 30% now. I hope you aren't at 50% :PThis is a lovely story so far. I'm very well able to relate through Yayati's life.
By the way, initially thought Yayati was a girl's name :D
Aarti, haven't you read Malgudi Days with me?
Pranjali ma'am, I think you'll have to read Malgudi Days alone. But then I think Gorab could provide you some company, won't you, Gorab?

For sure I'll keep prying when you start Malgudi. And interested to re-read Animal Farm. Also keeping an eye on Experiments with truth.

Thanks! I'll check that next time when I pick this. Introduction part, I was very confused on who is who as I was trying to establish Mahabharata links. Family tree would be very helpful here.
Wait, so Aarti is gonna re-read Malgudi Days with her soul-sister Pranjali and Gorab might also join AND it's on my to-be-reread shelf too?!!!!
What do you guyz think? A BIG buddy-visit to a small-town called Malgudi? :)
