Blasphemy!
Dang, I agree with everything you just said. However, I do have a blasphemous statement....I hate jazz. I know many people love it, but I need a song that I can sing to.
Interesting post, sir.I disagree with the Brian Wilson statement. I disagree with the Tom Waits statement. I'm a huge fans of both, although I can see how excessive praise of both would be exasperating to a non-fan.
I agree with the atheist thing. People who say "all religion is stupid" or spout off hokey bulls--t about how evil Christianity is, without knowing much about it, piss me off. And I'm not even a Christian.
What would I say that's blasphemous?
1. As I've said before, and on which Sally agrees, The Beatles bore the crap out of me. I tend to like bands influenced by The Beatles more than The Beatles. The only individual member who doesn't piss me off is George Harrison, and I guess Ringo doesn't count. But John Lennon...what a joke. "Imagine" is stupid. And Paul McCartney has finally been exposed, in the last couple of years, as the jackass he's always been.
2. I highly dislike people who act like major cities are all that matter in America, although I don't know if that is blasphemous as much the original statement is just dumb. People who say things like "New York is the cultural capital of America and nothing important happens outside of the city" seem to be looking for a way to justify their high rents and desperate, shitty living conditions.
3. I'm a little sick of the Obama worship. There's been a few times when it's been...well...come on...he's going to screw up, too. But I understand we're at a time where we need a guy to step up to the plate. I also don't think Sarah Palin is completely evil and stupid. Some Alaskans seem to like what she's been able to do for her home state.
I think that's the reason that I like Tom Waits - his voice makes me think of a witty, drunken hobo.Totally agree with you on #3. I'm for everyone believing whatever gives them comfort in life, but anyone from either side of the fence who wants to argue me down or recruit me is welcomed to f--- off.
Here's mine:
Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were awesome, despite what everyone else says.
Some would say, RA, that your take on the Beatles is incredibly blasphemous. But it's not like we're going to call a jihad on you.
Tom Waits is a great songwriter/lyricist, too, although sometimes I think the voice gets in the way of that for some people. The "Frank" trilogy...Swordfishtrombones...Rain Dogs...Frank's Wild Years...those are the true classics. I caution new fans to stay away from the early stuff.
1. Touch not the holiness of BSG. If thou hast the audacity to blaspheme against the sanctity, thou must ready for the hordes of mobs carrying thine spectors of holy righteousness and the apocalyptic ending of thy soul whence thou is sucketh away by airlock. Ahem.2. For every indisputable truth you hold, carry a sense of humor in your heart. There is always that one who will speak the con to your truth. And it is amusing to debate your truths/perspectives with a jesting tone. (or if you're an debater, pack your facts).
3. I know what you are, but what am I? ;)
I'll talk shit about the original BSG, since it was hokey as hell, but the re-imagining was, in my opinion, one of the best shows on television not just of this decade, but ever.
Heather wrote: "Dang, I agree with everything you just said. However, I do have a blasphemous statement....I hate jazz. I know many people love it, but I need a song that I can sing to."
So do I, Heather.
I've said this before to my friends and I'll say it again:1. I can't stand to listen to the music of John Mayer, DMB, Coldplay, and most REM. One friend, in particular thinks I have shitty taste in music because of this. I don't care. I just know what I like, and I don't like and I cannot stand the voices of DM, CM, JM, or MS. They could write the most clever lyrics (and I suspect they don't) and it wouldn't change the fact that I can't stand their voices. Period.
2. I live in the South. Most of my friends (and relatives on my mom's side of the family) are diehard Republicans. I had to keep my mouth shut on election night when they were grumbling about the election outcomes and how Obama's going to turn us all into socialists. Normally, I'm quick to respond to that sort of thing, but on election night, I knew that if I wanted to continue watching the results and maintain my safety, it was best to keep my thoughts to myself.
3. I don't get the fascination with reality television. It's just weird to me. It seems entirely too disclosive.
Their fanbase is numerous. I don't mind that they have fans... to each his own, but they're aggressive in trying to convince me that the music is above-standard - telling me "if you just listen/read the lyrics, etc, etc, blah, blah, mwah mwah mwah mwah." Oh, and I'm glad that you agree with me on that point, KD. :) ::high fives::
p.s. I like the av, KD. You look spiffy!
I think there was a time when saying REM's music sucks was tantamount to blasphemy, but over the years, I've come to merely appreciate their music, but not defend it in the die-hard way I once did.
What did you hate about it Ko?I think that the decline of REM's music and Michael Stipe's morphing into a Kermit the Frog lookalike happened at roughly the same time.
Jamie wrote: "The Rolling Stones can roll right off the Cliff of Oblivion for all I care..."Agreed. They are highly over-rated, imo.
I also don't get the whole reality TV thing. I have never watched American Idol or Survivor or any of that stuff...and I really don't ever care to.
Ahh...thanks Ko, that makes sense. I think that i'm so used to seeing that now that it no longer even registers.Jaime: Isn't it strange that reality tv is in fact so fake?
The SyFy channel should have kept "Sci-Fi." And air the stupidest, worst pieces of trash I've ever seen in my life. I have yet to find any reason to watch the SyFy channel. (I haven't been looking hard, either.)People who hate "organized religion" and think all religious people need to be shot are ridiculous. Or people who think that religious people are, by default, stupid.
I also had to fight a lot of my foreign friends when they would tell me that my country needs to stop using cars and just take the bus/walk/ride a bicycle a work. Um, excuse me? Have you BEEN to my country? Because it is HUGE. I've had some idiot friends refuse to believe me that there are NO buses that run within a half-hour DRIVE from my house. Some of us out in BFE need to have cars in order to get to work or get food and other necessities.
Uhhh... oh, this really annoys me. If you are a tourist in a developing country and you tell me that "life is so simple here", you're an idiot. Same if you try to claim that "people are happier with less stuff" but then don't try to act on it by going through your closet. Life is simple because you have no obligations and can sleep through your 8 am tantric yoga class and don't have to carry wet cement on your head while you work on a road that is still being used while your children play in said cement pile. And saying that "people are happier with less stuff" is just a way to rationalize your emotions, to make it so you don't feel too terrible for all those starving, homeless people because really, they're happy and wouldn't trade you lives in a heartbeat.
The Dalai Lama does not drink human blood or eat human flesh.
The Dalai Lama, while maybe being the "pope of Buddhism" and a cute little happy monk to you, is actually the spiritual and political leader of the world's largest refugee community and people die traversing the Himalayas in the dead of winter to see him/escape from the horrors inflicted upon them by the Chinese government.
There should be a Twilight Zone/Alfred Hitchcock Presents/Outer Limits/Monsters/etc. marathon on AT LEAST once every month of the year. And not just Fourth of July weekend and New Year's Eve.
*ahem* I'm very opinionated.
Thanks for the reminder, Heather. :)Here's one that seems to bother most people I know across-the-board:
I'm not a fan of the word "hate" (I have no issue with the people who use it - it's just a personal preference). You can peruse all my posts - I do not use it. It's not so much the word as much as the intent behind the word that I dislike.
I've heard "blah blah blah" about giving the word more power than it deserves... and "it's just a word."
I was raised to say "not particularly fond" (yeah - a fun phrase for a 3-4 year old - made me think twice about how I really felt about something) and "hate" and other vitriolic words were disallowed in our home. It was a good lesson for me to learn at an early age - think, really think about how I feel about something before I put those thoughts out for others' ears and eyes.
Who are DMB?I like Coldplay's first album, but when the second album sounded exactly alike, I didn't see any need to get it. I like R.E.M. despite the fact that most of their stuff sounds the same. :)
I find John Mayer easy to ignore.
I agree with Gus about Tom Waits. I don't care how brilliant his lyrics are, I can't get past his voice, and the music doesn't make up for it.
I like Obama, I think he's a fantastic speaker. But now, I'm waiting for him to ACCOMPLISH something.
I can't imagine not liking at least SOME of the Beatles' catalog. George is my favorite Beatle, I can imagine how frustrated he must have been as a songwriter before the Beatles broke up. I like his interest in spirituality, and I liked his collaborations with The Traveling Wilburys.

I also agree with everything Angabel said. Except for that last part, I guess, about which I have opinion.
I'm very agreeable today.
I am fond of all words. I apologize if my use of any of them grates on those who are on this board, but I will continue to use the word "hate" if I feel that it is applicable. And yes, I hate reality tv.
Feel free to use "hate"...Heidi's complained about the use of the word "hate" before. I hate when she does that.:)
I'm not offended, Heather. Use away... you just reminded me that I seem to stand alone (or rather lonely) in the fact I just don't/won't use it. Simple as that. :)RA - :P
SyFy was the WORST name change for the station. Let alone buying the license to air WRESTLING during primetime. WTF? How is wrestling SCI-FI?!?! Fact.Angabel -> Warehouse 13 isn't so bad. Features some steampunk, too.
I like Coldplay, REM and John Mayer, DMB. Doesn't mean I'll give haters of their music swirlies in the bathroom! HEE!
I'm with Heidi on the use of "hate". My father made us use other words than hate. Mostly b/c hate is a VERY strong word. You don't hate broccoli (with a passionate vengeance) but you dislike the taste. Something to that effect. Some days I slip up :P
Jamie wrote, 2089859 The Rolling Stones can roll right off the Cliff of Oblivion for all I care...
That's blasphemy in my book. I will build shrines in their honor, and I will defend the greatness of Mick and Keith any god damned day.

Yes, I thought the anti-Stones sentiment was blasphemy, too, but I thought maybe Jamie only knows the "new" Stones...and if you only know the Stones post-90 or so I can see why someone would dislike them.
I fourth that sentiment. Jackie - you took the words right out of my head. Jamie, you should listen to some of their older stuff - circa 60s/70s and even some of the early 80s. NM the fact that some of their songs ( 100+, actually) have been covered by other artists. My personal faves are Play With Fire, Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil, Wild Horses, Fool to Cry, Miss You, and Waiting on a Friend.

I heartily agree with your #s 1, 2, and 3! Soul sistah!

I agree with most of everything you say here, except why do you need to state that the Dalai Lama doesn't drink blood? What is that about?
And I'm intrigued about your opinions on early horror/cult culture. Kudos, but wowza.

In my generation there was a whole Stones vs. Beatles thing going on. In other words, you either liked one or the other. So blasphemy, especially to RA, I loved the Beatles. Didn't like the Stones. Except some of their very early stuff, like Ruby Tuesday. ALso, Mick Jagger always seemed like a superficial egomaniac, while the Beatles were Searching For Deep Meaning. hee.
Did you know Sympathy for the Devil was based on the very great book, Master and Margarita? I always did like that song, and now I've read the book, love it.
Yes, old dogs can learn new tricks!
I never liked either, Stones or Beatles, until recently (as many of you well know) I just discovered the ear candy that is the Stones. Holy love, I can't get any satisfaction.
They're moving into the Ani/My Morning Jacket/Spoon category for me = always good.
I have The Master and Margarita literally on my to read shelf in the bedroom. I want to pick it up but I want to wait until I have the energy and focus to get through it in a go or two.
That's reason enough to take a vacay, isn't it?

Mick IS an egomaniac, but a smart, musical one. I wouldn't want to DATE him, that's for sure! Actually, it's a good idea not to date ANY musician, is what I've heard. ;)
I have listened to their stuff, both early and late, and I gave them a chance. Yes, they were talented, yes, they are overrated. Wild Horses is one of my favorite songs, but not their version - I like Bush's cover. And Mic is a demi-god, but not for his music..So I guess I hit the blasphemy thing on the head, huh?
Are you serious? A musician as sexy as he is? Especially as he was? I'd do whatever! I can't believe you wouldn't!

1. All men (and women, obviously) are created equal.
2. The only things inevitable in life are death and taxes.
3. Sean Connery was, and still is, the best James Bond ever.
Now, some people hold fast to the notion that what they believe is the absolute truth, and most people will agree. But once in a while, you'll find that, contrary to popular belief, those "truths" will go challenged. For example, I may say "I think True Blood is boring" and I may get some responses back stating the opposite, but there's nothing controversial about it.
I'm bringing this up because there seems to be a select group of items/things that you may like that I think suck, and my opinion could possibly constitute blasphemy. Not in the Biblical sense, of course, but a blasphemous statement nonetheless. One time, some hipster d-bag tried to convince me that Miles Davis was the most over-rated jazz musician ever. While avoiding every inclination to beat the ever-living shit out of him, I told him his position was blasphemous and proved his point wrong. No, really, I did. He contended Louis Armstrong was far more important. I laughed in his fat fucking face, and then I belittled his clothes...
Anyway, sorry to be long-winded, but what music/books/opinions do you find to be personally contrary to what popular convention states otherwise? I'll start...
1. I think Brian Wilson's "contributions" to songwriting are HIGHLY overrated. Some consider him a genius songwriter. I think Brian Wilson gets a free ride because he's bat-shit crazy.
2. I can't stand Tom Waits' voice. Sorry. It sounds like a hobo gargling with barbed wire. I really can't take his voice.
3. Atheists are just as bad as religious fundamentalists, in that they're preaching the same kind of inflexibility in their position as those they oppose.
These are the kinds of positions I take that some might call...blasphemous.
