Andy (_btp) | 311 comments Hi - what Best of 2016 lists have you found that are particularly interesting?

any books you have read and recommend or have added as TBR from those lists?

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments have just added Claire-Louise Bennett's Pond
from economist Tyler Cowen's best fiction of 2016.
The list is his choice based on what he has read during the year rather than those published in 2016.

Margo I'm always playing catch-up and haven't read much that was published this year, nothing I'd get too excited about anyway!

My favorite reads this year have been Disgrace, Asking For It, Wool Omnibus, and my current read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Middlemarch.

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments Waterstones Book of the Year 2016 - The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

added as TBR
could be good choice for Horror/Gothic in Group Challenge 2017

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments excellent list of Science related books
Science Friday's The Best Science Books of 2016

have added Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space by cosmologist and novelist Janna Levin,
Time Travel by James Gleick
and Spaceborne by astronaut Donald Pettit as TBR

would highly recommend I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life by Ed Yong
and enjoyed the predecessor to Being a Dog: Following the Dog Into a World of Smell by Alexandra Horowitz

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments The New York Times 10 best books of 2016 - a mix of fiction and non-fiction

Includes our December read The Underground Railroad (probably won't get this from library until February)
and I've added The North Water as TBR

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments Goodread's own Best Books of 2016, #1 choice across each of 20 categories

includes The Underground Railroad, End of Watch and When Breath Becomes Air

message 9: by Margo (new)

Margo Of the GR winners list I have read 2: The Fireman and Truly Madly Guilty. Both OK but nothing to rave about.

message 10: by Paul (new)

Paul Its pretty much a big popularity contest, Harry Potter won not down to any quality of the book but links to what cane before.
It can be an interesting gauge of the big hitters in some ways .

message 11: by Margo (new)

Margo I never vote as I've never read enough of the books to form an opinion.

message 12: by Paul (new)

Paul I'll honestly don't think a lot of the voters have read enough of the books and in many cases the book they voted for. Some books recieved more votes than the total number of readers it got on Goodreads

Margo :-D

SherryRose | 0 comments I don't read very many new books. They're often available at our library so that's not the reason. I don't really have a reason for it. I only read one book on the gr voting list and it was so-so.

message 15: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments The lists listed give good ideas for reading though!

message 16: by Paul (new)

Paul I try to keep up with a few debut books each year and a few new releases so I had read a reasonable number in a couple of the sections.

message 17: by SherryRose (new)

SherryRose | 0 comments It's kind of a goal for me to choose some new books this year.

message 18: by Paul (new)

Paul A nice plan :-)

Andy (_btp) | 311 comments Cphe wrote: "@Andy, The North Water was a dark, dark read. Loved the setting and the time depicted but the cruelty to the animals was my undoing I'm afraid."

Hi Cphe, have started in on the Underground Railroad so will have to get through man's inhumanity to man first

agree that GR list gives a different view to most critic's best of list

in other news, TBR list has grown from mid 30s to 51 so far this month, don't think I'll be able to hold to my limit of 50 for end of year:(
