Tracey (traceyrb) | 365 comments The story starts out with American Robert Jordan being sent to dynamite a bridge to stop movements/attacks from the Fascists. He has spent 10 years in Spain prior to the war and knows the country and the language well.

1. Why is Robert involved in this war?
2. What do you think of the different characters of the Spaniards he meets in the hill country?
3. Do you think his relationship with Maria will hurt or heal her? How will it effect him?
4. Does there seem to be good relations within the group of resistance fighters? Good decision making? What were these people before the war?
5. "To kill them teaches no thing. You cannot exterminate them because from their seed comes more with greater hatred."
Who said this and do you agree with it?
6. What are you feelings after reading about the events that happened in the town when the Fascists town leaders were 'dealt with' by the people?
