Help Me Identify This Book?

Okay, this is driving me crazy! I read a couple of books a few years ago and would love to find something else by the same author.

The plot was: a woman is trying to get pregnant, but not having any success. Then her husband is informed that he is already a father. He had fathered a child during a drug-filled period, and the mother has died. So this ten (-ish?) year old boy is delivered by family services. The book follows the adjustments made by everyone.

The same author wrote another book where a stressed out mother abandons her children (including a son with special needs). The oldest daughter looks up the estranged grandmother, hoping for help. The story takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area.,

Does anyone know the author's name? Or the title of either of these books?

Hi Sheilah - First, I'll be no help to you. Saying that up front so as not to disappoint you further. I know exactly the first book you're talking about. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it is an older book. My first thought was Luanne Rice as the author, but I scrolled through titles and couldn't find it. The second book also sounds familiar, but not much more than that. I'll keep thinking about it, and if I come up with any info, I'll let you know. This will drive me nuts now. lol
