Yeah, it's a short story.

technically, it's a novella (17,501 - 40k), but yeah, it's substantially shorter than a novel. i'm at 58%

yes, the read begins dec. 1 and you have all month to read it.

I read it earlier this year so I'll chime in from time to time. It was creepy.
Oh those boating trips...

Yeah, same. I'll be joining in with the other one though.

Interestingly enough, I read the link I've enclosed here in spoiler tags just prior to reading The Willows, a bit of serendipity so serendipitious one is tempted to wonder if it can be entirely explained by coincidence. Don't read it unless or until you've read The Willows, since the material relates to the story's plot: (view spoiler)
I like to re-read this one every year! I'll wait until December 1st to start--it will be so exciting to get in on a conversation with this one!!!

I'm glad this one was chosen as it was the one I voted for! This is my first group read and I'm looking forward to it :)

My first group read! Very excited to start!

I'll be starting this in the next day or so. It's always nice when a group pick is "free."

one does need to get in sync with the style of its day (1907). its style is closer to the present-day than say The Tale of Cthulhu.
I'll start one day next week. Sorry it's a struggle for some of y'all. I love older stuff but I guess next time I'll have to take that into consideration. I've read this before but it's been ages ago.

Not every book or story "resonates" will all readers--that's what makes these discussions so interesting! Personally, if I had to pick one for my favorite short story of all time, it would be this one. In general--for the classic horror--I usually go with M.R. James. :)

If I had to pick a favorite short story mine would be the dead valley but I do really LOVE Ambrose Bierce!

Thank you Randy - I found it because of your free kindle book lists!

You got that right, John! lol
