When Adam Blake lands the best elective ever in his senior year, serving as an aide to the school psychologist, he thinks he's got it made. Sure, it means a lot of sitting around, which isn't easy for a guy with ADHD, but he can't complain, since he gets to spend the period texting all his friends. Then the doctor asks him to track down the troubled freshman who keeps dodging her, and Adam discovers that the boy is Julian--the foster brother he hasn't seen in five years.

Adam is ecstatic to be reunited. At first, Julian seems like the boy he once knew. He's still kind hearted. He still writes stories and loves picture books meant for little kids. But as they spend more time together, Adam realizes that Julian is keeping secrets, like where he hides during the middle of the day, and what's really going on inside his house. Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives.

Through chapter 11 (view spoiler)[This is breaking my heart. Poor Julian, dealing with all of this abuse. No wonder he doesn't know how to interact with other people. I wonder what happened with him and Adam...why did he leave? The uncle made it sound like they ditched him, but I don't think that's the case. (hide spoiler)]

Through chapter 24 (view spoiler)[I'm glad that Adam's friends seem to like Julian. I want more about Russell. He's horrid. Why did he take Julian just to abuse him? People can be so terrible. (hide spoiler)]

Through chapter 50. (view spoiler)[I can't fathom how anyone could do that to another person. Poor Julian, who's been forced to think that the people who care about him don't, abused physically and emtionally, and definitely mentally. And he's such a sweet kid. I just hope there's a good resolution. (hide spoiler)]

Really enjoyed this overall. It was heartbreaking and very emotional. I would have liked some things handled differently as far as the narrative went, but overall it was really good.
