So I would go with Powder Mage. It is a great series with lots of action and a unique magic system.

You all should read Glen Cooks Black Company books if you have never read those they are some of my favorite dark fantasy.
Peter V. Brett Demon Cycle series
Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series
David A. Wells Sovereign of the Seven Isles series
Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series
Anything by Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, Robin Hobb and Weis and Hickman
And if that isn't enough message me for more. I've been a voracious reader for over 30 years so I have read a lot of books

I second this series! It's so exciting to see someone else recommend this series, normally I'm the only one talking about it.
I will also recommend The Broken Crown by Michelle West who writes some epic, mulit-plot, story-driven books. This series also seems to be overlooked most of the time. It's a completed 6 book series, with a completed 2 book spin-off prequel, and an in progress 6 book spin-off.

I need to get it on Kindle and read it again, been years since I have an I loved it, also need to get all the Deathgate Cycle books on Kindle.
I marked The Broken Crown as want to read so I'll check it out at some point thanks for the post

Miles Cameron's Traiter Son series is incredible. In my very humble opinion, HBO would have done better to pick this author, and this series to base a show on.
There are characters you love, and ones you hate - in common with all of them is the rich development of their characters, it's based in what would have been in the middle ages - except, there really are Dragons, there really is magic (and it follows rules - none of this "super magic level up" stuff -
It's very well written and edited. And worth every penny, truly - I am a very big fan of the magic/swords and dragons and war genre, but unfortunately, it seems to me that it can be very difficult to find an Author and a book that keeps you awake till the wee hours of the morning - it's like potato chips - you can't have just one, you tell yourself, "just one more chapter, I have to find out what happened to the Red Captain!"
PLEASE choose these books! I have read each at last 4-5 times, and would love to have another person reading and posting to see what I missed, or an alternative viewpoint.
Miles Cameron - The Traitor Son series (though, I can not understand the "Traitor" part - maybe that's being saved for last.
Please to 10 to the tenth power choose "The Red Knight" book one of the Traitor son series!

Here is a link to the author of "the Traitor's Son Cycle" series...

The Red Knight

It's the "Traitor Son Cycle " not "The Traitor Son series

Assasain's apprentice is getting better and is supposed to be a real gem of the genre.
Thanks everyone and keep the recs' coming!

I myself have just finished Stormlight Archive 1+2 and wow! They were great!
I am trying to decided between
Sanderson-Mistborn
Anthony Ryan-Blood Song
For the next read. Suggestions?

I just started reading the Fifth Season by N.K Jemisin. So far totally different from anything I've ever read- in the best possible way.

I have read, and would definitely recommend, the "Mistborn" series also. Great story and unique magic system.
As for Anthony Ryan's "Blood Song"... it's on my list of series to read but I have not started it yet. Soon I hope.

Have read Gentleman Bastards, loved it.
Ryan's first book in the trilogy was fantastic, but it lost steam along the way in book 2 and 3. Overall they brought done a great opening book.
Mistborn is a great overall series, you will enjoy it. Interesting magic.

Broken Empire was very clever and cunning. The concept is actually rather brilliant. It does take on a darker tune than some of the other fantasy series, but I enjoyed it once I got into it and realized what was going on.
Riyria Revelations is my favorite series and I haven't seen it mentioned in this forum yet. Michael Sullivan actually has a new series set in the same world as Riyria (thousands of years earlier) called The Legends of the First Empire. Note that The First Empire is incomplete, final book is due out 2018.
Queen's Thief series is similar to Gentleman Bastard and was also quite enjoyable.
Enjoy!

I'm a huge fantasy fan and am looking for a new series to start.
I'm looking for something that does not take forever to get started, has great characters, surprising plot and just as important- that will not die down by the middle or the end.
Debating between:
The lightbringer series
Gentleman Bastard
Broken Empire
Powder mage
Other good ideas (didn't like The first law and Unhewn Thorne)
Thanks in advance (and may you always be reading a good book and have at least one more waiting at home)
