Martijn Heemskerk (zampano77) | 80 comments The librarian note attached to the Dutch ebook (9789025450465) forbids me to add a page count. My ebook has a fixed number of pages (101), it doesn't change when I change the font size. The etailer ebook.nl lists this book also with that page count. Please allow me to add the correct page count. At the end of the year, I would like to have a correct amount of pages read.

Sandra | 31525 comments What format ebook are you using Martijn?

If it is PDF your page count is allowed. Otherwise it is as lethe has said, the publisher must provide a number.

It's ePub. Please inform me which source is reliable for page count. Only the publisher's website? Retailers like libris.nl, ebook.nl and bol.com all use the data provided by the publisher and they all state the same page count: 101.

I was unaware of this rule. Has it been changed or added since my last entry in this group (May '16)?

Larry Piper (lgpiper) | 36 comments Should I start a new threat for a new book, or can I just tag along on this one, which does have an appropriately generic subject line?

Anyway, this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... doesn't have a page count. Given that the text contains about 41,000 words, I think the page count should be 120 pp give or take.

Thanks a bunch.

That is correct. I have not been able to find it on the publisher's website for the ePub.

No, it was already in place when I became a librarian in early 2015. It's also in the manual, but it does say "any other fixed page ebooks":
"Most ebook formats do not have a fixed number of pages since the pagination adjusts for screen size. If the publisher provides a specific page count, that number should be reflected in our book data. For PDF-specific editions, or any other fixed page ebooks, the normal paging rules may be used." (https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2...)

So if your ePub has a fixed page number it is allowed to add it. Please state in the change comment that it is a fixed page ebook, and remove the librarian note :)

I (re-)checked this ePub edition on my iPad, and the page number is 149 in landscape and 92 in portrait mode, so no fixed page number.

ETA2 And on my MacBook the page count is 117.

lethe | 16368 comments The manual goes on to say:

"If the publisher does not provide a page number, you may estimate the page count using a tool such as Calibre's Count Pages plugin. Be sure to leave a librarian note that this is an estimate and that the page number should be changed if the publisher releases a specific page count."

Perhaps that is an option for you?

We don't do give or take, but (see my msg #7^) page counts can be estimated using a tool. --> only for ebooks. Either count print pages, or leave the page count field empty.

(And please start a new thread if you have further questions about this, since this one is for a specific book.)
