8. Were you surprised by Mr Smiley wanting to create his own town?

Angela (angeladecker814) | 104 comments Yes, especially because he seemed to be so overwhelmed with maps and debts. That could have been part of his reason, though: a way to escape the map world a bit. He just went so overboard in it, though. Taking over the town, building an EXCESSIVELY fancy house, bickering with neighbors, etc. That house. It makes sense that he'd want real stone and be picky about other details, since he also likes original maps, but from my middle class perspective, it reeks of overindulgence, especially since he didn't have the money.

Good point Angela. His life had spun out of control at this point, and he had lost track of this priorities. Very pathetic.

Cindy | 522 comments I thought it went along with his general craziness and desire to control. Maps or towns, he thought he knew better than anyone else how they should be tended and presented. This doesn't mean I didn't feel a little sorry for him at times.

Ayse_ (ashlie_k) Not at all, there is some narcissism in him, he has an eye for detail, he likes social praise and approval.. I agree with Cindy, what better hobby for a map collector than making his own mark on a map..

Ruth (ruthiereads) I also thought it went along with his obsessiveness and need to have things his way. He also wanted people to look at him as some great benefactor or patron. Great comment about wanting to make his own mark on a map.

Chelsea | 562 comments It was his college dream with his college buddies! And when he sets his mind to something, he sticks with it. Like when he was stolen from, he didn't just back out of the business, he kept at it. He's very goal driven.

Also, Ayse, excellent comment. Totally agree!

Angela (angeladecker814) | 104 comments Oh, Ayse, I like that thought. It makes more sense that way.
