SOLVED. Fantasy about reincarnation kind of? [s]

I read this book maybe 5-7 years ago, and I can't remember anything about the author or the title and it's driving me nuts! It was a book about a knight (i think) who ends up being killed in a plot to assassinate the king. The knight is either cursed or there's some weird magic involved the moment he dies, because when his body dies, his soul transfers into the body of the leader of the band of the assassins.

I'm a little fuzzy on whether or not it was the first of a series of books, but I do know that eventually, his body moves from the assassin to a woman who kills the assassin. That may have been the second book, but I'm not sure.

Also, I remember thinking the book was pretty grim. Not much happiness is found for the main character.

I know that's not a lot to go on, but I hope it's enough for someone!
