Question: 47
Explanation of book-question link: My height in inches is 66. This book was #66 on my to read shelf when I gophered for the challenge.

This was a real surprise. I bought it 3 years ago as a kindle deal but then never felt interested in reading it, until this challenge kind of forced me to. And I loved it!

Zolang er leven is het tweede geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen, 85 jaar by Hendrik Groen
Book link: Zolang er leven is: het tweede geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen, 85 jaar
Question: 48
Explanation of book-question link: Someone I miss are my grandparents, and I chose this book to represent my granddad. The book is the diary of an 85-year old man who lives in a care home for the elderly. He describes his life and the things happening in the home. He's a founding member of the old-but-not-dead-club, a group of 8 people from that care home who don't want to wither away and once a month they in turn organize little outings and they stir up the place a little. They avoid complaining about their illnesses and such, but do make jokes about it. It's a sweet, touching, funny and sad book, all at the same time. My granddad never lived in a care home, but the MC of the book reminds me of him. My granddad also enjoyed life, and I think he would have been a perfect member for that old-but-not-dead club.

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments I'm glad that your pick for this task was a 5 star read for you, Peggy.

message 208: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Me too! It's funny that we all find this so important for this task. It shows that we really care about the people we miss and want to do them justice :)

message 209: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments I still haven't done that task yet. I should make it a priority.

message 210: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Great choice Peggy. I just read a book for this task. I struggled for ages but I plumped for a book I had and to be fair, isn't really the best choice for my grandad but I wanted to cover that task. So it's done now. But even if I am sure there are other books out there that would fit for my grandad better, at least I have been thinking about him whilst working out what books might fit and reporting the book read which is the honouring part for me.

I Heart Ed Small by Shirley Johnson
Book link: I Heart Ed Small
Question: 43
Explanation of book-question link: I would like to travel to the 60s. The blurb suggested this book was set in that time, and it was, but only for the first quarter. Still, I think the book fits the question for two reasons: I picked 60s because of the hippie era, Woodstock, the music, the clothing, the people, the spirit. This is not restricted to the 60s but also fits the 70s, and the rest of the book was set in the 70s. Several of the major characters were hippies, and there were references to music, clothing, hairstyles etc. throughout the book. Second, the things that happened in the first quarter of the book (so in the 60s) were crucial for the events 5 and 10 years later.

Book link: Enchantress
Question: 21
Explanation of book-question link: 32 candles. When I gophered I found Elantris as #32, but I didn't want to read it as it has only 1 published book and I don't want to read it and wait for ages before I can continue with the series. So instead I looked at the current #32, which was Enchantress. It's also the first in a series, but at least more (all?) books have been published.

3.5 stars isn't too bad. It gives me a bit more confidence in reading this book.

Just 5 to go, Peggy! You can do it.

message 233: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments No, it wasn't bad at all. It might have gotten 4 stars if I hadn't read the painted man right before. I'll read the next one in the series if I can get a cheap ebook. The only downside is that the books are a bit chunky, and I want chunky books to be 4 or 5 stars because all the time I have to invest in it.

I agree about wanting chunky books to be very good, but 3.5 starss is pretty good for a freebee ;-)

Completed 06/11 - ★★★★

message 236: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11638 comments I have to try that author. I've put A Thousand Splendid Suns on my wish list. Do you think it's a better book than The Kite Runner?

message 237: by Peggy (last edited Nov 07, 2017 02:11AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I liked it better, but I don't remember why :/ I wrote a review for A Thousand Splendid Suns but didn't for the Kite Runner and it's been a while since I read them. I think ATSS had a bigger impact on me than The Kite Runner, but I really enjoyed both. ATSS I also read in a time when there was so much on the news about refugees so it was probably also reading that book at that particular time that made it so powerful for me. You should give Hosseini a try :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments I'm impressed! Just 4 books to go.

message 241: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've impressed myself too! This was a great challenge for me, very compatible with other reading and books that I've been wanting to read for a long time. I read 61 books this year of which 46 were for this challenge, but it doesn't feel like the year was so challenge-focused at all.

message 242: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments Maybe because the challenge was so individualized, it was easier to fit books in. I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

message 247: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm now reading Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. For the other two tasks I have several books that will work, but right now I'm leaning towards The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives and Between Shades of Gray
