Janice | 5 comments Apologies for a dumb question - I'm trying to be obedient and post a personal thread...but don't know how to create a new thread!

message 102: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments It's best to do it on the full website.

Go to the FolderChallenges: Year Long

At the top of the page, just to the left of the group's avatar, you will see a tiny link "New Topic". Click on it and fill in the appropriate fields. Name the topic in a way that identifies it as yours. Type in your first message and then save.

Easy, peasy.

I'm glad you're going to join us. :)

message 103: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1797 comments I'd like to join this challenge, but starting 5 months into the year is a bit daunting. If I read a book in 2017 but before officially starting the challenge, and it fits one of the categories, can I count it?

Sorry, you count books you've read from the time you start the challenge. It's doable. Remember, the challenge is for 12 books. We have lots of people who have already completed the challenge and have moved on to the voluntary Parts 2 and even Parts 3.

Give it a shot and see how far you can get. You might surprise yourself. :)

And welcome to YLTO!

Saar The Book owl | 2651 comments Can I also use the books that I'm currently reading for the Good Read's Challenge or is that not possible? I'm doubting to start this challenge. It sounds interesting.

Yes, you can use books you are currently reading for the Goodreads Challenge, Saar. As long as they fit in with the tasks/answers you gave to the questions you are good to go.

message 109: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hm, I thought you couldn't do that. I think you can only count books that you start reading after you have answered all the questions.

It's a very interesting challenge Saar! And keep in mind that you only need to read 12 books to complete this challenge :) Reading more is just for fun, but not neccessary.

You could well be right, Peggy. I think my brain has gone on strike due to the heat and humidity here ;)

message 111: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments You have to have started the Survey challenge before you can start counting books towards it. That means that you need to have set up your thread and answered the questions. Once you have done that, your start date for the challenge has been established. You may not apply books you've read or started before that date.

The only challenge that may affect what you read is the YLTO Monthly challenge. You may not read the same book for those two challenges. Any other challenge outside the group isn't taken into consideration.

message 112: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2651 comments So, I've started the Goodreads Challenge at the beginning of the year. If I complete the questionary and I start this challenge also, can I add the books that I've read for this challenge to the Goodreads Challenge?

message 113: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, that's right :) You have to separate GoodReads in general from this specific group (YLTO).

You can add whatever you read for this questionnaire challenge to your general GoodReads challenge.

If (after you fill out the questionnaire) you read a book for your GoodReads challenge that fits the questionnaire you can also add that book to the questionnaire challenge.

The only thing you can't do is fill in the questionnaire today, and then add books to it that you read or started before today. And if you also join some of the monthly challenges we have here in YLTO, you also can't count a book for both the monthly challenge and the questionnaire challenge.

I hope this is clear! Don't hesitate to ask if it's not :)

message 114: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments The Goodreads challenge is run by Goodreads and is basically "how many books are you going to read in 2017". As Peggy has stated, it is not connected in any way to YLTO's "Survey Says" challenge.

In order to count books towards the YLTO's Survey Says challenge, you must start and finish the books after you've set up your thread and answered the survey questions.

Say you do that today, your start date for the challenge is June 22, 2017. Any books started or finished prior to Jun 22 will not count. Sorry, but for someone to start the challenge now, and then go back to January 1 and cherry pick through the books they've completed is not fair to those who started in January and had to search (gopher) and find books specifically for the challenge and then read them.

You might think it's unfair to start the challenge mid-year and have less time than everyone else to complete the challenge. Unfortunately, that's the only way we can work it. You still have 6 months to read 12 books. Have fun with it, and then you'll be ready to start the 2018 challenge when it's presented and have a full year for that one.

message 115: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2651 comments Thanks for the explenation. I understand it now.

@Janice: I wasn't planning on adding books that I've read before starting the challenge. It's not fair to other readers. I don't think it''s unfair to start now. It's called a challenge for a reason ;)

So, I will go through the questionaire and start reading. I'm exited!

message 120: by Anne (Booklady) (new)

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 1282 comments I am slapping my forehead, again! I answered the question about the birthday candles wrong. I said 60 candles - that would have been a sight!! (And probably would've melted the cake) On the cake was actually 2 candles: a 6 and a zero - 0, so I should read #2 on my TBR shelf.

Right Janice? I've started that book.

message 121: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments The answer to that task was pretty open. You could take it literal as to how many candles were physically on your cake, or it could be more representative of your actual age. It sounds like you answered with your age.

You're going to hate this answer, but part of the rules were that once you'd posted your answers, you couldn't change them...

I'm sorry. :(

Mariab | 3059 comments Janice wrote: "You're going to hate this answer, but part of the rules were that once you'd posted your answers, you couldn't change them... ..."

I was wondering if we can "rearange" the books we have already read and reported for a task, for another task, and freeing the said task for a new book (I hope someone understand what I want to say...). Example: I read a book for "time period", but it fits another task: Genre SF, could I read a new book for "time period" and assing the previous book for SF?

message 125: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I believe that was answered previously, Mariab, and it was decided that a book could be swapped up until the time it was reported for a badge. So, if you haven't received a badge that included that book yet, then it's ok. If it was already reported for part one or part two in the reporting thread, then it's too late to swap it. Please correct me if that's wrong, Janice.

Sarah | 18550 comments Welcome Amanda. You need to set up your own thread where you post the answers to the questions. You will also keep track of your progress with what books you've read in that thread too. Check out the threads in this section to see how people have done it. Any questions, let us know.

ETA: see msg 102 for more details on how to set up yoyr own thread.
