I want to be honest with you: you know all those shows and movies and comedy that Amy Poehler is famous for? I haven't watched any of them. I haven't seen Parks & Rec (though "Treat Yo Self" is my mantra); I didn't/don't watch SNL; I didn't see any award show that she and Tiny Fey hosted; and I have yet to enjoy her voice work in the animated film, 'Inside Out.'
But I adore Amy Poehler.
It doesn't make sense, right?
This adoration for Amy is actually based on everything she has done off screen. And the more I research, the more I realize how much she has done.
Without further ado...
14 THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT AMY POEHLER
1. She helps guide and nurture young female comedians. I.e. She brought 'Broad City' to television as its executive producer!
2. Alongside her friends Meredith Walker and Amy Miles, she founded Smart Girls organization and also started the Smart Girl YouTube series "Ask Amy" in which she gives life advice/answers questions sent in from her viewers. Smart Girls is dedicated to "helping young people cultivate their authentic selves."
3. She is not afraid to speak her mind. And, you know... tackle the patriarchy in the process.
4. Likewise, she is a feminist.
5. And she is helping women to reclaim the word "bossy." (See Also: Tina Fey).
6. Amy & Tina Fey's friendship is legendary. They have been friends for over 20 years(!) and it is the kind of friendship everyone hopes to have.
7. She writes topless. As a writer myself, I say #Goals.
8. She actively works with the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. The 2013 Emmy's "Losers Party" she hosted with Jon Hamm directly benefited the WWO in that all of the Emmy winners that wished to attend were required to donate to the foundation (losers got in for free); they raised $20,000 this way. As an exemplary volunteer for WWO, she knows the CEO personally, is always asking how she can best help the cause, and rather than writing a big check every year, she hosts events and fundraisers. (More here).
9. Amy is a founding member of the 'Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre,' (UBC) which is currently the only accredited improv training program in the United States.
10. The speech she gave at the Harvard Class of 2011 graduation/Harvard College Class Day). Equal parts brilliant advice and humor.
11. Take a second to consider Amy's resume: writer, producer, actress, philanthropist. The woman can do (and does) anything and everything.
12. According to Aziz Ansari (cast mate on 'Parks & Rec'), she knows the lyrics to every Bone Thugs-N-Harmony song. Dedication, my friends.
13. She is candid about everything.
14. And she is not afraid to be silly.
When YES PLEASE was released in October 2014, I knew I wanted to read it because of these reasons and so much more. I love who Amy is and what she represents without being that "funny gal" on television. When people say they can't stand her because they don't like her type of comedy, THIS is what I want to tell them. I want them to read 'Yes Please' to realize that she is so much more than her comedic persona.
I'm just imagining how my views of her will change (assumingly for the better) after I finish her book. Of course I will let you know!
