I read it a while ago, so I don't remember all of it (actually I think I dnf'ed it - it was a book club read and it was so slow that I just didn't finish it in time for our meeting, at which point I likely gave up). He does go through some of the open country in Australia, but mostly the book is about people he meets, and mostly those people are in towns and cities, so I wouldn't count it for "wilderness."
