When parents over rule

In the book "Code Orange" Mitty had great positive influences.However they are a bit pushy.In the story it talks about how Mitty was only attending school just because his parents wanted him to. Some parents try and live their lives through their children whether they know it or not.How would you react if your parents did this to you? Would you still obey orders to respect your parents? Or would you stand up for yourself and proceed to do what you want to do? Thoughts?
